What Defines Baroque Furniture

Baroque allows no straight line where a curve is possible. Legs bow outward, backrests sweep in wide arcs, edges turn into volutes and shells. This formal language is not decoration applied afterwards, it sits in the construction itself. That is why genuine baroque furniture cannot be reproduced industrially: every carving is worked by hand from solid timber.

Then there is the gilding. Gold and silver leaf are laid in very thin layers and polished, a step that takes practice and patience and that no machine replicates. It is this surface that gives baroque furniture its depth: it returns light differently from any paint and shifts with the daylight.

For fabrics we work with velvet, silk brocade and chenille, often with woven patterns. They are dense enough to carry the upholstery and at the same time carry the pattern that makes the style. A baroque armchair is therefore never merely a seat, but the visual centre of a room.

Baroque in Modern Interiors

A common assumption is that baroque furniture needs a period building with mouldings and five-metre ceilings. The opposite is true: in a historic room it blends in, in a modern one it sets an accent no other piece achieves. A gilded console against a white wall, a throne chair in a concrete loft, a baroque mirror above a plain sideboard: the contrast carries.

For a fully baroque interior, hold a consistent line on timber tone and gilding, then vary fabrics and formats. For single accents, choose one strong piece per room and keep the rest quiet. Both work, as long as the choice is deliberate.

In commercial projects the style never went out of fashion: hotel lobbies, restaurants, chambers and reception areas rely on baroque because it establishes prestige immediately. We supply such projects in series and produce to measure on request.

Materials and Craft

We work with solid mahogany, walnut, oak and beech, with marble for table tops, bronze and brass for fittings, genuine leather and velvet for upholstery. Load-bearing parts are solid rather than veneered, because carving needs material depth.

Behind every piece stands a workshop with its own tradition. A single baroque armchair passes through twenty to forty operations there, from cutting to carving, from sanding to gilding and upholstery. That time shows in the finished piece, and it is the reason baroque furniture lasts for decades and is often passed on.

The History in Brief

Baroque emerges around 1600 in Rome and spreads across Europe through France and Italy. Under Louis XIV it becomes statecraft in furniture form: Versailles sets the benchmark for the entire continent. The shapes we still reproduce today come from that period.

Around 1730 rococo succeeds baroque, lighter and more playful, with asymmetric ornament. The two styles sit so close that they are almost always presented together. What sells today as baroque furniture draws on both periods and adds dimensions suited to modern homes.

No. Our baroque furniture consists of new pieces in the historic style, handmade in predominantly European workshops. The techniques match the originals, but the pieces are new, undamaged and available in dimensions that suit modern homes.

Yes, often better than a period room. Against a plain wall a gilded piece works as a deliberate contrast. What matters is the dose: one strong piece per room is usually enough.

What does a baroque piece cost?

Do you produce to measure?

How is delivery handled?

By freight forwarder to your door, and on request into the apartment. Large pieces are secured and packed, delicate surfaces protected additionally.

How do I care for gilded surfaces?

Dust dry and without pressure, using a soft cloth or brush. No damp cleaners and no textured microfibre, as gold leaf is extremely thin. For a specific piece we are happy to advise.
