How Many Chairs Fit at Which Dining Table?

You have purchased a dining table or are planning to acquire one and are now wondering how many seats can realistically fit around it? The number depends on the table size, shape and desired seating comfort. If you plan too tightly, you will sit uncomfortably later, if you calculate too generously, you waste valuable space. This article shows you which measurements you should plan per person and how to find the right combination.

Basic Rule: At Least 60 cm Width per Person

As a rule of thumb: each person requires approximately 60 cm of table width to sit and eat comfortably. It becomes more comfortable with 70 cm, especially if you like to set the table generously or use larger plates. In depth, calculate at least 40 cm per place setting so that plate, glass and cutlery have space and elbows do not get in each other's way.

Rectangular Tables: Length Determines Seating Capacity

For rectangular Dining Tables, orient yourself by the length of the long sides. A table with 160 cm length offers space for two persons each on the long sides, thus four seats in total. From 180 cm onwards, three persons fit on each side, making six chairs possible. At the short ends, you can additionally place one chair each, provided the table legs are not in the way and the width is at least 90 cm. A 200 cm long table comfortably accommodates eight persons.

Round Tables: Consider Diameter and Circumference

Round dining tables create a convivial atmosphere, but the space calculation follows different rules. The circumference results from diameter times pi (3.14). A table with 120 cm diameter has a circumference of approximately 377 cm, divided by 60 cm this yields six places mathematically. In practice, four to five persons sit more comfortably, as round tables become narrower towards the centre. From 140 cm diameter onwards, six persons fit, from 160 cm eight persons.

Square Tables: Compact but Limited

Square tables are well suited for smaller rooms. A 90 x 90 cm table offers space for four persons, one per side. At 120 x 120 cm, you can also place four chairs comfortably, if necessary also six, when two sides are occupied with two Chairs each. Larger square tables are rare, as they claim much space without offering proportionally more seating.

Extendable Tables: Flexibility for Guests

Extendable dining tables solve the problem of fluctuating numbers of people elegantly. A table that grows from 160 to 220 cm extends the capacity from four to six to eight persons. Ensure that the extension mechanism is stable and the table legs allow sufficient legroom even when extended. Plan at least 50 cm additional length for the extension to gain two more seats.

Distance to Wall and Freedom of Movement

Besides the pure table size, you need space for standing up and walking around. Calculate at least 80 cm, preferably 100 cm between table edge and wall or furniture. This way, persons can comfortably push back the chair and others can pass behind them. In narrow rooms, it helps to position the table lengthwise rather than crosswise to keep the walkways clear.
