Round Garden Table: How Much Space Between Chairs
When planning a round garden table, you often face the question of how many chairs actually fit around it and how close they may be placed. Too little space makes guests feel cramped, too much distance appears sparse. The correct spacing between chairs determines comfort and atmosphere when dining outdoors. This article shows which measurements are sensible and what you should consider when planning.
Minimum Space Per Person at a Round Table
As a rule of thumb: each person requires approximately 60 cm width at the table to sit and eat comfortably. For a round table, this corresponds to an arc distance of about 60 cm along the table edge, measured from chair centre to chair centre. It becomes more comfortable with 65 to 70 cm, especially when chairs have armrests or when you frequently serve multi-course meals. At less than 55 cm it becomes tight, elbows bump into each other and standing up becomes difficult.
Calculating Seating Capacity by Table Diameter
The number of chairs can be determined via the table circumference. A round table with 120 cm diameter has a circumference of approximately 377 cm, divided by 60 cm yields six places. A table with 150 cm diameter offers space for eight people, at 180 cm ten chairs fit. Those planning more generously reduce the number by one to two places. Bear in mind that with an odd number of people the symmetry is lost, which is usually less noticeable with round tables than with rectangular ones.
Influence of Chair Width and Armrests
The actual width of the chair plays an important role. A narrow stacking chair without armrests manages with 55 cm spacing, a wide upholstered chair with armrests requires at least 65 cm. Measure the outer width of your chairs and add 10 to 15 cm clearance between them. When selecting Garden Furniture, it is worthwhile to pay attention to uniform chair dimensions so that the spacing remains equal everywhere and the overall appearance looks harmonious.
Distance to Table Edge and Legroom
Besides lateral spacing, the space between chair edge and table rim also counts. Ideally 30 to 40 cm, so that one can stand up comfortably without having to push the chair far backwards. Ensure that the table frame, especially with central pedestal constructions, does not collide with the chair legs. A round table with a central foot offers more flexibility here than models with four legs, which can restrict movement space.
Visual Effect and Decoration
Well-proportioned spacing between chairs ensures not only comfort but also an appealing appearance. Chairs placed too closely make the table appear overloaded, too far apart makes the gathering feel uncomfortable. If you complement the table with Garden Decoration such as candle holders or a centre bowl, the diameter of the decoration should be at most one third of the table diameter, so that enough space remains for dishes and guests can see each other across the table.
Practical Tips for Planning
Before you finally position table and chairs, a trial setup is recommended. Place the chairs around the table and sit down with a second person. This way you notice immediately whether the spacing is sufficient. Mark the ideal positions with chalk or adhesive tape on the floor, especially if you wish to place the furniture permanently on a terrace. Also consider the walkway: at least 80 cm should remain free around the table so that guests and hosts can move without bumping into things.
