The Correct Seat Height: Chair or Armchair for Desk Height

Chair or Armchair at the Desk: Which Seat Height for Which Table

Anyone working or reading at a desk needs the correct seat height. Too high, and the shoulders tense up. Too low, and the back suffers. Many buyers wonder whether a classic chair or a comfortable armchair is a better fit and which dimensions work for their table. The answer depends on the table height, one's own body height and the intended use.

The Basic Rule: Seat Height Plus 30 Centimetres Equals Table Height

A proven rule of thumb states: the difference between seat height and table top should be approximately 27 to 32 centimetres. For a standard desk with a height of 75 centimetres, a seat height of 43 to 48 centimetres is suitable. Always measure the seat height from the floor to the upper edge of the seat surface, not to the upholstery under load. With upholstered furniture, one sinks in a few centimetres, which you should factor in.

Chairs for Precise Work and Frequent Standing

Classic Chairs usually have a seat height between 45 and 48 centimetres and are well suited for desks with a height of 72 to 76 centimetres. The upright sitting position and the absence of armrests make it easier to move close to the table edge. Anyone who writes, draws or stands up frequently benefits from the compact form. Ensure that the thighs are horizontal and the feet rest flat on the floor when checking the seat height.

Armchairs for Extended Reading and Relaxation

An upholstered Armchairs offers more comfort during longer sessions, such as when reading or proofreading. The seat height is often somewhat lower, between 42 and 46 centimetres, because the upholstery yields. Armrests support the forearms and relieve the shoulders, but can make it more difficult to move close to the table. Check whether the armrests fit under the table top or whether you need to position the armchair at a slight angle.

Body Height and Individual Adjustment

People over 1.80 metres often need a higher seat height to avoid bending the knees. Conversely, shorter people under 1.65 metres should look for a lower seat height or use a footrest. A simple check: when seated, the angle between thigh and lower leg should be approximately 90 degrees. The forearms rest loosely on the table top without the shoulders being raised.

Height-Adjustable Tables and Fixed Seating

Anyone who owns a height-adjustable desk can adapt the table height to the seating. Then the exact seat height plays a lesser role. With a fixed table, however, you must choose the seat height precisely. Some historical desks, for example in Baroque style, are built somewhat higher at 78 or 80 centimetres. A chair with a seat height of 48 to 50 centimetres or a lightly upholstered armchair with corresponding initial height is suitable for these.

Material and Upholstery Influence the Effective Height

A wooden chair with a solid seat surface maintains its height permanently. An armchair with foam upholstery or spring core yields under body weight, often by 3 to 5 centimetres. Factor in this difference when measuring the seat height. Leather and firm fabrics deform less than soft velour or velvet covers. Test the seating furniture under load to determine the actual working height.
