Upholstered chair: which fabrics withstand pets
Anyone who has dogs or cats knows the problem: claws leave pulled threads, hair gets embedded, and after just a few months the new chair looks worn. Many pet owners therefore wonder whether fabric upholstery is even an option or whether only leather is a solution. In fact, there are fabrics that are significantly more resistant than others. The decisive factors are thread thickness, weave type and surface structure.
Flat weaves instead of velour or chenille
Fabrics with long loops or roughened surfaces practically invite claws to catch. Velour, chenille and coarse textured weaves are therefore unsuitable for pets. Smooth flat weaves such as canvas, jacquard or sturdy cotton blends are better suited. They offer claws less surface to grip and are easier to vacuum. Microfibre in dense weave can also work, provided the thread count is high enough.
Abrasion cycles as a measure of durability
The durability of a fabric is indicated in Martindale abrasion cycles. For private living areas, 15,000 cycles are considered the minimum; for Chairs with pets, it should be at least 25,000 to 30,000. High-quality contract fabrics reach 50,000 or more. These values are usually found in the product description or can be requested from the manufacturer. The higher the number, the longer the surface remains intact.
Dark colours and patterns conceal traces
Light, solid-coloured fabrics show every scratch and every hair clearly. Dark tones in anthracite, brown or navy blue are more practical because signs of wear are less noticeable. Even better are patterns or mottled weaves, where small irregularities disappear in the overall appearance. Those who prefer light furniture should at least look for a structure with colour gradation rather than opting for plain pure white.
Removable covers make maintenance easier
Even robust fabrics require regular cleaning when animals live in the household. Removable covers with zips can be machine washed and are more hygienic in the long term. Make sure the fabric is washable at at least 40 degrees. Firmly upholstered versions without removable covers require more frequent vacuuming and occasionally professional cleaning. For heavily used seats, an additional slipcover can be useful.
Impregnation as additional protection
Many furniture fabrics can be impregnated afterwards to protect them against moisture and dirt. Whilst this does not prevent scratches, it makes removing stains easier and reduces the penetration of odours. Special textile sprays for upholstered furniture are available from specialist retailers. The impregnation should be renewed after each wash. When selecting new Chairs, it is worth asking about factory-treated fabrics, which often have more durable finishes.
