The motif
A putto holds an upreared dolphin with both arms, the water falling from its mouth into the basin below. The basin is cut as a large shell, with a wavy rim and deeply carved ribs. It is carried by a baluster foot with acanthus leaves on a round base.

Craftsmanship and stone
Figure, basin and foot are carved separately and assembled on site; the water is led concealed through the foot. Pump and pipework are not included in the delivery. The piece is worked from a natural block of marble, roughed out by hand, modelled and finally ground and polished. Every block brings its own veining, so no two pieces turn out alike.

Placement and effect
A fountain of this build belongs in the middle: on a lawn, in a courtyard, at the end of a path axis. A calm surface is best left free around it, so that the water stays audible and the silhouette stands free.

Material and care
Marble is a natural stone and ages with dignity, a soft dry cloth is all it takes for dusting. Acidic cleaners, vinegar and descalers do not belong on the surface, they attack the limestone. Veining, colour gradients and small inclusions are natural features of the material and not a defect.
