The motif
On a white ground a floral picture of peonies, cherry blossom and a pair of birds is framed by blue borders with a diamond pattern. The neck opens into a waved gilt rim, two scrolled handles sit at the shoulders. The imagery follows Chinese famille rose painting, imitated in Europe since the 18th century.

Craftsmanship and painting
The floral pictures are applied as overglaze painting, the gold edges drawn by hand. Rim, handles and foot ring are fully gilded. The piece is made of slip-cast porcelain which gains its hardness and gloss in the firing. Painting and gilding are applied by hand after the firing and fired a second time.

Placement and effect
At 60.3 cm the vase is large enough to stand alone: beside a fireplace, on a chest of drawers or in pairs to the left and right of a doorway. It also carries tall branches without tipping.

Material and care
Porcelain is colourfast and does not age, a soft dry cloth is all it takes. Hand-painted areas and gilding must not go into the dishwasher. Because every piece is painted by hand, no two are identical: slight variations in tone and brushwork are part of the process and are not a defect.
