Where is the best place for the bed in the bedroom?
The position of the bed determines how well you sleep and how harmonious the room appears. Many people wonder how much space is needed from the wall, whether the headboard may be placed by the window, and which distances are practical. The right answer depends on the room size, the heating, and your habits. With a few guidelines, you will find the optimal solution for your bedroom.
Distance between bed and wall: minimum dimensions for comfort
Plan at least 60 cm of space on the long sides so you can get in and out comfortably. For two people, 70 to 80 cm is ideal, because then you can also get up at night without waking your partner. At the foot end, 50 cm is sufficient if there is no wardrobe there. If the bed stands freely in the room, you should leave at least 60 cm all around so the room does not appear overloaded.
Headboard against the wall or by the window?
The headboard traditionally belongs against a solid wall, not under a window. There it is draughty in winter, the heating is usually underneath, and light disturbs sleep in the morning. If the floor plan allows no other solution, opaque curtains and an upholstered headboard that shields draughts will help. Better is a wall without a window, ideally opposite the door, so you see the bed when entering but do not lie directly in the line of sight.
Distance from heating and radiators
Maintain at least 30 cm distance from radiators so the air can circulate and the bedding does not dry out. For Beds with a high headboard or upholstery, it should be 40 to 50 cm, because otherwise heat accumulation occurs. If the heating is under the window, it is better to move the bed to another wall or position it crosswise if the room is wide enough.
Consider room effect and symmetry
A centrally placed bed appears calm and inviting, especially in large rooms from 16 m² onwards. In smaller rooms, the bed may also stand in a corner, as long as one side remains freely accessible. Two bedside tables create symmetry and are practical, but each requires 40 to 50 cm of width. If space is lacking, one bedside table on the side from which you get up more frequently is sufficient.
Practical rules of thumb for planning
These guidelines will help you with planning:
- At least 60 cm on the side for comfortable getting in and out
- 70 to 80 cm for double beds for two people
- 50 cm at the foot end if no furniture follows
- 30 to 50 cm distance from radiators

Measure before purchase whether enough movement space remains, and check where sockets for bedside lamps are located.
