Bedroom for Two: Nightstands, Clearances, Walkways
When planning a bedroom for two people, the question arises of how much space is really necessary. Is the clearance to the wall sufficient? Will two nightstands fit? And how wide should the walkways be so that you do not get in each other's way in the morning? The answer depends on the room size, but also on fixed dimensions that have proven themselves in practice.
Minimum Clearance Between Bed and Wall
On both long sides of the bed, you should allow at least 60 cm of space, preferably 70 to 80 cm. This clearance enables comfortable getting in and out without having to squeeze through sideways. If you wish to place a nightstand on one side, add its depth: a typical nightstand measures 35 to 45 cm in depth, so that a total of approximately 100 to 120 cm between the bed edge and wall makes sense. At the foot end, 50 cm is sufficient, provided there is no passageway there.
Two Nightstands or One?
Whether you place nightstands on both sides depends on the room width. With Beds of 160 or 180 cm width and a room of at least 3.50 m width, there is space for two nightstands without the walkways becoming too narrow. In narrower rooms, a single nightstand can stand on the side that is used more frequently, or you can choose wall-mounted shelves. Symmetry appears harmonious, but is not a requirement.
Walkways in the Bedroom
For the main walkway, for example from the bed to the door or to the wardrobe, you should provide at least 80 cm width. This value allows relaxed passage, even when you are carrying clothing over your arm in the morning. If the wardrobe is opposite the bed, allow an additional 90 to 100 cm in front of the wardrobe doors so that they can open completely. In small rooms, secondary walkways may shrink to 60 cm if they are only used occasionally.
Nightstand Height and Proportions
The top edge of the nightstand should be approximately at the height of the mattress top, plus or minus 5 cm. With a bed height of 55 cm including mattress, a nightstand of 50 to 60 cm height is suitable. This way you can comfortably reach the lamp, book or alarm clock while lying down. The width of the nightstand may be 40 to 50 cm without appearing visually too bulky. With Side Tables with a slender footprint, more movement space remains next to the bed.
Room Size and Furnishing
A double bed with two nightstands ideally requires a room of at least 3.00 m by 3.50 m. At this size, the walkways remain clear, and a wardrobe also finds space. Smaller rooms require compromises: forgo the second nightstand, choose a narrower bed or opt for space-saving wall shelves. Measure the actual placement area before purchase and mark the furniture outlines with masking tape on the floor to check the proportions.
Practical Rule of Thumb for Planning
For quick orientation, you can use the following reference values:
- Lateral clearance bed to wall: 70 to 80 cm
- Nightstand depth included: 100 to 120 cm total
- Main walkway: 80 cm, in front of wardrobe doors 90 to 100 cm
- Nightstand height: mattress top plus or minus 5 cm
- Minimum room size for double bed with two nightstands: 3.00 m by 3.50 m
With these dimensions, a bedroom is created in which both people have enough space without disturbing each other.
