Bed with Footboard: Which Length for Different Body Heights

When buying a new bed, people often face the question of how long the sleeping surface needs to be to comfortably accommodate both head and feet. Particularly with beds featuring a visible footboard, the correct length plays an important role, as no one wants to bump their toes at night or wake up in the morning with cramped legs. The appropriate bed length depends not only on body height but also on personal sleeping habits and the height of the pillow. In this guide, you will learn which dimensions are suitable for which body height and what to look for when making a purchase.

Basic Rule: Body Height Plus 20 Centimeters

As a rule of thumb, the sleeping surface should be at least 20 centimeters longer than your own body height. Someone who is 1.80 meters tall therefore requires a mattress of at least 200 centimeters in length. This extra space ensures that there is still room above the head for the pillow and that the feet do not rest directly against the footboard. People who move a lot during the night or prefer to sleep stretched out should plan for a buffer of 25 to 30 centimeters to lie truly comfortably.

Standard Dimensions and Their Suitability

Most Beds in Germany are offered with a length of 200 centimeters. This dimension fits well for people up to approximately 1.80 meters in body height. For taller people, extra lengths of 210 or 220 centimeters are available, which are increasingly found in standard ranges. Those shorter than 1.70 meters can also manage with 190 centimeters in length, but must then specifically search for shorter models when selecting Beds, as these are offered less frequently.

Special Considerations for High Footboards

A pronounced footboard, as is frequently found on baroque or country house beds, can visually shorten the usable sleeping surface. In reality, the mattress length remains the same, but the high footboard appears closer and can create a feeling of confinement for very tall people. Anyone over 1.85 meters tall who chooses a bed with a high footboard should therefore definitely opt for the extra length. Alternatively, the bed can also be positioned slightly at an angle in the room, if the room height permits.

Couples with Different Body Heights

When two people with a significant height difference sleep in one bed, the length is always based on the taller person. A downward compromise inevitably leads to uncomfortable nights. In such cases, it can make sense to use two individual mattresses of different lengths in a shared bed frame, provided the model allows this. This way, each person receives the appropriate sleeping surface without the footboard moving too close for one person.

Practical Tips for Selection

When purchasing, you should consider not only the mattress length but also the overall length of the bed frame. A bed with a footboard typically requires 10 to 20 centimeters more floor space than the pure sleeping surface. Therefore, measure the available space in the bedroom precisely before deciding on a model. Also ensure that the mattress and slatted frame match the bed length exactly, so that no gaps or overhangs occur that would impair sleeping comfort.
