Sculpture on the Chest of Drawers: What Weight the Top Can Bear

You would like to place a decorative sculpture on your chest of drawers but are unsure whether the top can support the weight? This question is justified, as not every chest of drawers is designed for heavy objects. The load-bearing capacity depends on the material, construction and thickness of the top. In this article you will learn which guideline values apply and what you should pay attention to when placing objects.

Load-Bearing Capacity According to Material and Construction

Solid wood chests of drawers made of oak, walnut or mahogany typically support between 30 and 60 kilograms on the top surface, provided the top is at least 25 millimetres thick and rests on a stable body. Veneered chipboard or MDF panels achieve approximately 15 to 30 kilograms depending on thickness and substructure. Marble or granite tops are self-supporting and easily hold 80 kilograms and more, provided the base is dimensioned accordingly. Even weight distribution is always crucial: point loading on a small area stresses the material more than a broadly resting object.

Weight of Common Decorative Sculptures

Small bronze figures weigh between 2 and 8 kilograms, medium-sized marble busts weigh 10 to 20 kilograms. Ceramic sculptures usually weigh less than 5 kilograms, while larger stone figures quickly reach 30 kilograms or more. If you wish to place Sculptures, check the weight beforehand: manufacturers often state it in the product description, alternatively a bathroom scale will help.

Guideline Values for Safe Placement

As a rule of thumb: the sculpture should not weigh more than one third of the maximum load capacity of the top. This provides safety against impacts and vibrations. Place heavy objects as centrally as possible or above the supporting side panels, not at the front edge. With Commodes that have drawers, ensure that the top is firmly connected to the body and not merely resting on it. An additional felt underlay protects the surface and prevents slipping.

When Reinforcement Makes Sense

If you wish to place a particularly heavy sculpture, you can increase the load-bearing capacity through reinforcement. An additional crossbar beneath the top or an inserted steel plate distributes the load better. With antique or valuable furniture, however, you should avoid such interventions and instead place the sculpture on a separate pedestal next to the chest of drawers.

Recognising Signs of Overloading

Watch for sagging of the top, cracks in the veneer or creaking sounds when opening the drawers. These signals indicate that the load is too high. In this case, remove the object immediately and check the chest of drawers for damage. As a preventive measure, it is advisable to reposition heavy decorative pieces regularly so that the material can recover.
