Fountains Near Walls: What Distance Prevents Splash Water

You would like to place a fountain near a house wall, garden wall or terrace, but are unsure how much space is needed to prevent splash water from causing damage. Moisture on the facade can lead to algae growth, discolouration or mould in the long term. The correct distance depends on the fountain height, wind exposure and type of fountain. With a few reference values, the ideal location can be reliably determined.

Rule of Thumb: Distance Equals Fountain Height

As a basic rule, the distance to the wall should be at least as large as the maximum height of the water fountain. If the water sprays 80 centimetres high, you should allow at least 80 centimetres distance to the wall. In windy locations, increase this value by 30 to 50 per cent, as gusts of wind drive the water sideways. In sheltered courtyards or under roofing, the simple fountain height is often sufficient.

Differences Between Fountain Types

Not every fountain splashes equally. Wall fountains are specially designed for mounting on walls and direct the water in a controlled manner into a basin, so that hardly any splash water occurs. Free-standing Garden Fountains with a central jet, on the other hand, create a fine spray that spreads around the area. Cascade fountains, where water flows over several levels, splash less far, but can also cause moisture with strong pump performance.

Specific Minimum Distances for Typical Installations

The following reference values have proven effective in practice:

  • Small table fountains or indoor fountains: 20 to 30 centimetres from the wall
  • Garden fountains with 50 to 80 centimetres fountain height: 80 to 120 centimetres distance
  • Large Fountains and Water Columns with over one metre fountain: at least 150 centimetres
  • Wind-exposed locations: 50 per cent safety margin in each case

Protection Through Flooring and Drainage

Even with sufficient distance, fine spray can reach the wall. A water-impermeable floor covering such as natural stone or porcelain stoneware around the fountain prevents moisture from collecting in the ground and creeping towards the wall. A slight slope of the floor away from the building ensures that excess water drains away. Alternatively, you can install a splash guard made of Plexiglas or glass on the side if space is limited.

Adjust Pump Performance Instead of Increasing Distance

Many fountains allow the pump to be regulated. If you reduce the performance, the fountain height decreases and thus the required distance. This saves space and at the same time reduces power consumption. After installation, test in different wind conditions whether splash water reaches the wall, and adjust the pump accordingly. This way you find the balance between water feature and wall protection.
