Bed Without a Nightstand: Which Alternatives Work
You are furnishing your bedroom and wondering whether it always has to be a classic nightstand. Perhaps space next to the bed is limited, or you prefer an unconventional solution. In fact, there are several practical alternatives that accommodate a lamp, book, and smartphone just as well. Below, we show you which options are available and what you should consider.
Wall Shelf or Wall Board at Bed Height
A narrow wall shelf mounted at mattress height saves floor space and serves the same purpose as a nightstand. A depth of 20 to 25 cm and a length of at least 40 cm is recommended. Make sure the lower edge of the shelf is approximately 10 to 15 cm above the top of the mattress, so you can reach it comfortably while lying down. Such a board leaves the floor clear and appears visually light, especially in small rooms.
Stool or Side Table as a Flexible Solution
A low stool or compact side table can be moved quickly and adapts to changing needs. Choose a height of 45 to 55 cm so that the storage surface is approximately at mattress level. Models with a round base require less space in the corner and avoid sharp edges. This option is particularly suitable if you occasionally rearrange the furniture or wish to use the stool for other purposes during the day.
Console Behind the Headboard
If your bed stands freely in the room or has a gap from the wall, you can place a narrow Consoles behind the headboard. This solution works well with Beds that have a low backrest or no headboard at all. The console should not be wider than the bed itself and should have a depth of no more than 30 cm, so it does not protrude too far into the room. This creates a continuous storage surface accessible from both sides.
Ladder or Clothes Rack with Shelf
A wooden ladder or clothes rack with wide rungs can be positioned next to the bed and provides space for clothing, blankets, and small items. On the lowest or middle rung, you can place a small tray to hold your phone and reading glasses. This option combines storage and wardrobe and suits a casual, Scandinavian-inspired interior style.
Using a Built-In Alcove or Window Sill
If your bed stands next to a wall alcove or a wide window sill, you can use this surface as a natural shelf. A window sill should be at least 15 cm deep and at a suitable height. If necessary, the alcove can be extended with an inserted board or small panel. Make sure there is no draught from the window and that you can reach your belongings comfortably at night.
What to Consider with All Alternatives
Regardless of the solution you choose, you should ensure that the storage surface is stable enough for a bedside lamp and that cables reach the nearest socket. A minimum surface of 30 by 30 cm provides sufficient space for the most important items. Also check whether you can reach things easily in the dark without having to get up. This way, comfort is maintained even when you forgo the classic nightstand.
