Chest of Drawers in the Children's Room: Which Height for Independent Access

When furnishing a children's room, parents face the question of at what height a chest of drawers should be mounted or positioned so that the child can independently access their clothing. The right height promotes independence while preventing dangerous climbing attempts. The child's age, body height, and type of use play a decisive role. This guide shows which dimensions have proven effective in practice.

Orientation Based on the Child's Body Height

The top drawer or storage surface should be approximately at the child's chest height so they can reach in comfortably. For toddlers between two and four years old, this means a maximum reach height of 70 to 80 centimeters. School children between six and ten years old can easily reach 100 to 120 centimeters. A good rule of thumb is: the child should be able to reach into the top drawer with slightly bent arms, without having to stretch or stand on tiptoes.

Standard Dimensions and Growing Solutions

Commercially available Commodes typically have a height between 75 and 95 centimeters, which works well for children from about four years old. For younger children, a lower chest of drawers with 60 to 70 centimeters height is recommended, or using only the lower drawers of a taller chest. Many parents arrange the furniture so that daily needed clothing is stored at the bottom and seasonally used items are kept in the upper compartments.

Safety Through Stable Construction

A children's chest of drawers must be tip-resistant, as children like to lean on it or pull themselves up on opened drawers. The piece of furniture should either have a high inherent weight or be secured to the wall with brackets. Heavy objects belong in the lower drawers to keep the center of gravity low. Drawers with soft-close or dampening mechanisms prevent pinched fingers and make closing easier for small hands.

Practical Guidelines by Age

  • 2 to 3 years: maximum reach height 70 centimeters, low chests of drawers or shelves with open compartments are ideal
  • 4 to 6 years: maximum reach height 90 centimeters, standard chests of drawers with 75 to 85 centimeters height fit well
  • 7 to 10 years: maximum reach height 120 centimeters, even taller chests of drawers up to 100 centimeters are usable
  • from 11 years: adult dimensions of 90 to 110 centimeters are reachable

Supplementary Storage Within Reach

In addition to the chest of drawers, wall hooks at 90 to 110 centimeters height or low clothing rods help children hang up jackets and bags themselves. Open shelves or baskets at floor level are suitable for toys or shoes. The combination of different heights supports independence and keeps the room tidy because every item has a fixed, accessible place.
