Sideboard as TV Stand: What Depth for Cables and Devices
You want to use a sideboard as a TV stand and wonder how deep the furniture needs to be so that television, receiver and cables fit behind it? The right depth determines whether devices disappear neatly and cables do not protrude visibly. Furniture that is too shallow makes the television appear wobbly, furniture that is too deep takes up unnecessary space. This article shows which dimensions work in practice and what you should consider when planning.
Minimum Depth for Standing Televisions
A television on a stand requires a stable support surface. Most TV devices between 43 and 65 inches have stands with a depth of 25 to 35 cm. The sideboard should be at least 40 cm deep so that the television stands securely and does not tip forward. For larger devices from 75 inches onwards, 45 to 50 cm depth makes sense. Make sure that the stand does not protrude over the edge, otherwise stability is lacking.
Space for Receivers, Consoles and Soundbar
Under or next to the television there are often additional devices: receivers with about 30 cm depth, gaming consoles with 25 to 30 cm or a soundbar. These devices need ventilation, at least 5 cm distance to the back wall. A sideboard with 40 cm depth offers just enough space, 45 to 50 cm are more comfortable. If you stack several devices on top of each other, also check the height of the compartments: 15 cm per device is a good guideline.
Cable Management and Connections
Behind the devices run power, HDMI and antenna cables. These require about 10 to 15 cm space, especially when plugs protrude at right angles. For Sideboards with a back panel, cable outlets should be present, otherwise you have to drill yourself. Open backs make cable management considerably easier. Plan an additional 5 cm if you want to bundle cables in cable channels. This keeps everything tidy and you can reach the connections when needed.
Wall Distance and Spatial Effect
A sideboard directly against the wall saves space but makes access to cables more difficult. A distance of 5 to 10 cm from the wall creates space for plugs and ventilation. The total depth of furniture plus wall distance should not exceed 55 cm, otherwise the room appears overloaded. In small rooms, 40 cm deep Sideboards are often the better choice because they are less bulky and still offer sufficient storage space.
Rule of Thumb for Practice
For most living rooms, the following guideline applies:
- 40 cm depth: sufficient for televisions up to 55 inches and one to two flat devices
- 45 cm depth: comfortable for televisions up to 65 inches, several devices and organized cable management
- 50 cm depth: generous for large televisions from 75 inches onwards, many devices or if you want space for decoration in front of the devices
Measure the depth of your television and devices before purchasing. Add 10 cm for cables and ventilation. This way you will find the sideboard that fits technically and appears visually harmonious.
