Chest of Drawers with Mirror Above: Which Proportions Harmonize

You would like to place a chest of drawers and hang a mirror above it, but are unsure which size ratios look visually balanced. The combination of chest of drawers and mirror is classic and functional, but for the ensemble to appear harmonious, width, height and distance to each other must fit. In this article you will learn which proportions have proven successful and what you should pay attention to when arranging.

Width of the Mirror in Relation to the Chest of Drawers

As a basic rule: the mirror should take up approximately two thirds to three quarters of the width of the chest of drawers. If the chest of drawers is 120 cm wide, for example, a mirror with a width of 80 to 90 cm harmonizes well. A mirror that is too narrow appears lost, one that is too wide makes the chest of drawers appear to shrink visually. With very wide Commodes from 150 cm onwards, you can also hang two smaller mirrors side by side, each with some distance to the centre.

Height and Hanging

The lower edge of the mirror should be 10 to 20 cm above the top edge of the chest of drawers. This distance creates space and leaves room for decoration such as candelabras or small vases. If you hang the mirror too high, the visual connection to the chest of drawers breaks off. If you hang it too low, the arrangement appears squat. The total height of chest of drawers plus mirror should be oriented to the room height: in rooms with 2.50 m ceiling height, the upper edge of the mirror ideally remains approximately 2.00 to 2.10 m above the floor.

Frame Style and Material

Frame and surface should match the chest of drawers stylistically. With a baroque chest of drawers with carvings and gold leaf, a Mirrors with an ornamental frame in similar colouring is recommended. With a simple country house chest of drawers made of light wood, a mirror with a narrow wooden frame or a frameless model appears harmonious. Ensure that the colour temperature matches: warm wood tones do not go well with cool chrome or silver.

Practical Reference Values at a Glance

  • Mirror width: 65 to 75 percent of the chest of drawers width
  • Distance from chest of drawers to lower edge of mirror: 10 to 20 cm
  • Total height of chest of drawers plus mirror: maximum 200 to 210 cm with standard room height
  • Frame thickness: with narrow chests of drawers under 100 cm width maximum 5 to 7 cm, with wider furniture up to 10 cm

Lighting and Spatial Effect

A mirror above the chest of drawers reflects light and optically enlarges the room. If you place the chest of drawers opposite a window or a light source, the mirror amplifies this effect. Avoid hanging the mirror so that it points directly at an untidy corner or a door. In narrow hallways, a wide mirror above a flat chest of drawers can widen the space, while in large bedrooms a taller standing mirror next to the chest of drawers is often the better choice.
