Sideboard Under the Television: Which Width and Which Height
You are planning to place your television on a sideboard and wondering what dimensions the piece of furniture should have? The right width and height determine whether the overall appearance looks harmonious and whether you can watch television comfortably. Both the size of the television and the seating position in the room play an important role. In this article, you will learn which guidelines apply and what you should pay attention to when making your selection.
The Right Width of the Sideboard
As a rule of thumb: the sideboard should be at least as wide as the television, preferably 20 to 40 cm wider. A 55-inch television measures approximately 123 cm in width; here a sideboard with 140 to 160 cm is recommended. For a 65-inch device with around 145 cm width, the furniture may well be 160 to 180 cm wide. This way, the television appears visually integrated and not oversized. Additionally, space remains on the sides for decoration, speakers or a soundbar.
The Optimal Height for Comfortable Viewing
The height of the sideboard determines at which level the centre of the screen is located. Ideally, this should be at eye level when you are sitting on the sofa. With a seating height of approximately 45 cm and an eye level of around 100 cm above the floor, the top edge of the sideboard should be between 40 and 60 cm. Lower models around 50 cm are therefore often the better choice than tall cabinets. Measure your seating position in advance to determine the appropriate height.
Distance Between Sofa and Television
In addition to the dimensions of the furniture, the distance to the seating area also plays a role. As a guideline: the distance should be approximately two to three times the screen diagonal. For a 55-inch television, this corresponds to 2.80 to 4.20 metres; for 65 inches, approximately 3.30 to 5 metres. If the sofa is closer, the picture quickly appears restless. If the distance is greater, you can choose a wider sideboard without the room appearing overloaded.
Material and Stability
Ensure that the sideboard safely supports the weight of the television. Modern flat screens weigh between 15 and 30 kg, larger models even more. The surface should be level and stable. High-quality Sideboards made of solid wood or MDF with a reinforced top provide the necessary load-bearing capacity. Also check whether the furniture has cable channels or recesses for wiring; this makes installation considerably easier.
Storage Space and Proportions
A sideboard under the television not only serves as a surface but also provides storage space for receivers, consoles or DVDs. Models with drawers and doors keep the technology hidden and ensure tidiness. The depth should be between 40 and 50 cm so that the furniture does not appear too bulky and enough space remains for devices. Ensure that the proportions match the rest of the room: in small rooms, narrow, low Sideboards appear lighter; in spacious living rooms, wider and deeper models are appropriate.
