Deauville Film Festival Interiors: Furniture for Galas, Screening Rooms and Sets

Every September the American film festival brings Hollywood to a small resort town on the Normandy coast, two hours from Paris and a world away from the Mediterranean. Deauville is half-timbered rather than whitewashed, its light is cool and northern, and its interiors were built around fireplaces rather than around terraces. Casa Padrino, one of the leading international specialists for luxury furniture, supplies the pieces that furnish evenings like these, and the same collection is bought as set dressing for film and television productions throughout the year.

This page begins with the town, because Deauville asks for something quite different from a Riviera festival, and getting that wrong is the most common mistake in furnishing here.

A resort invented on purpose

Deauville did not grow, it was founded. In the 1860s the Duke of Morny, half-brother of Napoleon III, looked at an empty stretch of marshland across the river from the old fishing port of Trouville and decided to build a resort for Paris. Within a few years there was a racecourse, a casino, a railway line and a grid of villas. The town has been what it was designed to be ever since: the seaside annexe of the capital.

The architecture that followed is unmistakable. Anglo-norman half-timbering, steep tiled roofs, dark beams against pale render, bay windows and verandas facing the Channel. The grand hotels came in the years before the First World War, the Normandy in 1912 and the Royal shortly after, both in the same idiom scaled up to enormous size. Coco Chanel opened her very first boutique here in 1913, which tells you what kind of clientele the town was already attracting.

Then there are Les Planches, the wooden boardwalk laid along the beach in 1923, lined with bathing cabins that carry the names of American film stars. That detail is not decoration, it is the town's whole relationship with cinema in one object, and it long predates the festival itself.

The American film festival began in 1975 and has run each September since, filling the casino, the Centre International de Deauville, the grand hotels and the villas with screenings, dinners and press events for ten days. Around it sit the horse auctions and the racing season, which bring their own calendar of receptions.

Northern light, and what it does to a room

This is the practical difference from Cannes or Venice, and it changes the furniture. Deauville light is soft, grey-white and diffuse for much of the year, arriving off the Channel through cloud rather than off a blue Mediterranean. It flatters materials with depth and warmth, and it makes pale, flat surfaces look colder than intended.

The rooms answer that. Deauville interiors are panelled rather than stuccoed, and they are built around fireplaces. Dark timber, deep leather, heavy textiles and warm metals all work here in a way they would feel oppressive further south. This is Chesterfield country: our Chesterfield furniture in genuine leather sits in a panelled Norman room as though it were made for it, and in many senses it was, since the anglo-norman style is a French answer to English country building.

The climate is the second factor and it is the opposite of the Riviera problem. Instead of relentless sun, there is damp: sea air, rain, and long closed seasons in villas that are used for weekends and holidays. Solid wood handles that if it is properly dried and jointed to allow movement; veneers over composite board lift. Metal fittings need a real finish because salt reaches here too, carried on Atlantic wind rather than a Mediterranean breeze.

The rooms of a festival, and what furnishes them

The panelled gala dinner is the Deauville signature: a long table in a room with a lit fireplace and dark woodwork, chairs that look right from every angle, and light from a chandelier rather than from windows. Our dining tables, chairs and chandeliers cover that directly.

The screening and club lounge is where leather belongs: deep Chesterfield armchairs, a low table, warm wall lighting. It is the most characteristic Deauville room and the easiest to get right.

The press and interview corner is small and endlessly photographed: two facing luxury armchairs, a marble side table, panelling behind.

The hotel suite facing the Channel needs to feel residential and warm: an upholstered bed, a gilded mirror, soft lighting.

And the veranda or garden terrace, which in Normandy means sheltered rather than sun-drenched, wants rattan and teak that can take rain. Our terrace and garden furniture is built for weather.

Furniture as set dressing for film and television

Away from the festival itself, a steady part of our business is furniture bought for productions. Set decorators and property buyers come to us for the same reason event organisers do: we hold a wide range of period-looking pieces in stock, and stock is what a shooting schedule needs.

Normandy is filmed constantly, and the requests follow the region: panelled study and library interiors, Chesterfield seating for club and drawing room scenes, carved and gilded salon furniture for period drama, large ornate mirrors that give a camera depth, chandeliers and candelabra for candlelit scenes, and commodes and consoles that fill a wall convincingly.

Beyond the look, two things count for a production buyer. The pieces have to be available now, and they have to survive being moved between set-ups repeatedly. Solid frames and real joinery matter more on a set than in a living room, because a set piece is carried, turned and repositioned dozens of times.

Because we sell rather than hire, a production keeps the pieces afterwards, which across a long shoot usually costs less than repeated rental. Our page on film set and gala furniture covers that side in detail.

Materials and craftsmanship

Solid mahogany, oak and walnut form the structural basis of most of our classical pieces. Carving is done by hand, gilding is applied as leaf rather than sprayed, and upholstery is built up in layers on a solid frame instead of over a moulded shell. Leather is selected as full hide, which is what allows the deep buttoning a Chesterfield needs.

Metalwork runs from polished brass and antique bronze to wrought iron worked in the old way. Glass and crystal components for chandeliers are cut, not pressed. In a panelled room lit by a fire and a chandelier, those differences are exactly what the eye and the camera pick up.

Bespoke production and quantity

Events and productions regularly need something the catalogue does not hold: twenty identical chairs rather than the twelve in stock, a table built to the length of a specific room, a piece in a house colour, or a copy of a historical form for a period scene. We adjust dimensions, change woods and finishes, work to a specified fabric, and build individual pieces from a drawing.

For quantities we quote as a project rather than per item. Tell us the date first, because it decides what is realistic.

Delivery to Deauville and Normandy

Casa Padrino ships worldwide, and France is one of our established markets. Deliveries to Deauville, Trouville, Honfleur, Cabourg and the surrounding coast are routine, as they are to Paris two hours away. Larger and heavier pieces travel by freight forwarder with a delivery appointment, smaller items by parcel service.

Delivery is made kerbside to the given address. Carrying items into the building, up stairs or into the room of use is not part of the standard service, so please arrange help on site in advance. Deauville villas often have narrow staircases and low beamed doorways behind a generous facade, which is worth measuring before ordering anything large. During the festival week, delivery windows at the hotels need booking ahead.

We do not operate a showroom in Deauville. What we offer instead is detailed photography, dimensions, material information and direct advice by telephone and email before the decision is made.

Why Casa Padrino for festival and production interiors

Casa Padrino has grown into one of the internationally known names for baroque, Art Nouveau, Art Deco and contemporary luxury furniture, with customers in more than fifty countries and a catalogue running into thousands of pieces. In May 2025 our designer Marvin Schertl received the International Design Award for Excellence in Luxury Furniture, presented at a gala dinner in Cannes.

For this kind of work the breadth is the point: one supplier can dress a gala room, a screening lounge, a suite and a set without the result looking assembled from four different places. Add stock availability, workshops able to build what the catalogue does not hold, and enough experience with fixed dates to say honestly what will arrive in time. The full collection is at casa-padrino.de.

Frequently asked questions

Do you deliver furniture to Deauville?
Yes. Deauville, Trouville, Honfleur, Cabourg and the whole Normandy coast are regular delivery destinations, as is Paris. Large items travel by freight forwarder with an appointment. Delivery is kerbside to the address given, so arrange carrying help in advance.

Which furniture suits an anglo-norman villa?
Panelled rooms with fireplaces want depth and warmth: Chesterfield leather seating, solid dark timber, heavy textiles, warm metals, a substantial mirror. Pale flat surfaces look cold under northern light.

Is the Normandy climate a problem for solid wood?
Less than for veneered board. Properly dried solid wood with joints that allow movement copes with damp sea air; thin veneers over composite lift at the edges. Villas that stand closed between visits should be aired rather than sealed.

Do you supply furniture for film and television productions?
Yes. Panelled study interiors, Chesterfield seating, period salon furniture, throne style armchairs, large mirrors, chandeliers, commodes and consoles are regularly bought as set dressing. We sell rather than hire.

Can you deliver in time for the festival in September?
Usually yes, if you tell us the date at the first enquiry. Stock items are the realistic route for short lead times; bespoke production needs to start considerably earlier.

Can you supply larger quantities of identical chairs or tables?
Yes. Quantities beyond stock are produced to order and quoted as a project. Tell us the number and the date together.

Which pieces photograph best?
Those with real depth: hand carving, gold leaf, deep buttoned leather, cut crystal, aged mirror glass. In a panelled room, deep buttoning and warm leather read particularly well because the light is soft.

Do you rent furniture for an event?
No, we sell. For a recurring event or a production company working across several projects, buying usually costs less over two or three uses than hiring, and the pieces remain an asset.

Do you also furnish the villas and hotels themselves?
Yes, and that is often the more sensible purchase, because the furniture stays in use after the festival week. Hotels, boutique hotels and restaurants are a core part of our business.

How does an enquiry work?
Send us the rooms or the set, the date, the quantity and the access route. You receive a selection with alternatives, material information and a delivery estimate, and for larger jobs a written offer covering the whole scheme. Enquiries in English, French and German are handled directly.
