What a camera does to furniture

Furniture behaves differently on a lens than it does in a showroom, and the differences are consistent enough to be worth stating plainly.

Depth survives, flatness does not. A camera reads shadow. Hand carving, deep buttoning, applied mouldings and real gold leaf all cast small shadows that give a surface texture at distance. A printed woodgrain, a sprayed gold finish or a moulded shell has no shadow of its own and reads as exactly what it is, particularly under the hard, even light of a film set or an event rig.

Reflection is a tool and a hazard. A large mirror is the single most useful object in a small set, because it doubles the apparent depth of a room and gives a camera somewhere to look. It is also the fastest way to get the crew and the lighting rig into the shot, which is why aged and antiqued mirror glass is often preferred on set: it reflects softly rather than sharply.

Scale reads bigger than you think. A wide lens flattens a room and shrinks its contents. Furniture that looks generous in a living room can look modest on screen, which is why period sets tend to use pieces one size larger than a domestic interior would.

Cut crystal and pressed glass are not interchangeable. Under a lighting rig, cut crystal separates light into distinct points while pressed glass produces a dull, undifferentiated glow. On a candlelit scene that difference is the whole effect.

Two requirements sit behind all of them and matter more than the styling. The pieces have to be available now, because a shooting schedule cannot wait for production lead times. And they have to survive handling: a set piece is carried, turned, repositioned and stacked dozens of times across a shoot, which is why solid frames and real joinery matter far more on a set than they do in a private living room. Stapled board frames and veneered composite do not last a production.

Buying instead of hiring

We sell furniture; we do not run a hire fleet. For some jobs that is the wrong answer, and it is worth being direct about which.

Hire makes sense for a single short shoot with an unusual requirement that will never recur, and for anything needed within days in a city where a prop house already holds it.

Buying tends to win in three situations. On a long production, where the same pieces are needed for weeks or months, purchase usually costs less than the accumulated weekly rental. Across a slate of productions, where a company shoots repeatedly in similar periods, the furniture becomes a reusable asset rather than a recurring line item. And for a recurring annual event, where the same gala is staged each year, two or three editions generally cover the purchase.

There is also a practical advantage that is easy to overlook: bought furniture does not have to be returned in the condition it left in. On a set where pieces get moved hard, that removes a whole category of argument and damage waiver.

Events, galas and brand activations

The event side works to the same rules with one addition: the room has to be built and finished in hours, not days, and it will be photographed by guests as much as by the official camera.

The gala dinner is the standard job. A long table, chairs that look identical from every angle and stay comfortable through a full evening, candelabra, and light from above rather than from the walls.

The reception lounge carries the arrival, and it is where velvet sofas, gilded armchairs and tall mirrors earn their place, because they make a temporary room feel established within a day of installation.

The photo and interview corner is the smallest and most reproduced element of any event: two facing luxury armchairs, a low table, a calm backdrop. It deserves more attention than its footprint suggests.

Festivals we furnish around

Each festival city imposes its own conditions, and we have written those up separately: Cannes, where access on the Croisette during the fortnight is the limiting factor; Venice, where everything arrives by boat and is then carried over bridges; Deauville, where the light is northern and the rooms are panelled; and Monte-Carlo, where lift dimensions and the absence of any storage space decide the delivery plan.

Materials and craftsmanship

Solid mahogany, oak and walnut form the structural basis of most of our classical pieces. Carving is done by hand, gilding is applied as leaf rather than sprayed, and upholstery is built up in layers on a solid frame instead of over a moulded shell. Leather is selected as full hide, which is what allows the deep buttoning a Chesterfield needs. Marble is selected as a slab rather than ordered by the square metre.

Metalwork runs from polished brass and antique bronze to wrought iron worked in the old way. Glass and crystal components for chandeliers are cut, not pressed. Behind that stands long experience with European workshops in Italy, Spain, Portugal and eastern Europe, several of which have produced for us for many years.

Bespoke production, quantity and dates

Productions and events regularly need something the catalogue does not hold: forty identical chairs rather than the twelve in stock, a table built to the length of a specific hall, a piece in a production or brand colour, a copy of a historical form for a period scene, or seating built in sections so it can be carried to where it is needed.

We adjust dimensions, change woods and finishes, work to a specified fabric, and build individual pieces from a drawing. Quantities beyond stock are quoted as a project rather than per item.

One request we make of every enquiry: tell us the date at the start. It determines everything else. Stock is the realistic route for short lead times, bespoke needs to be started considerably earlier, and we would rather say clearly at the beginning that something will not arrive in time than discover it together three weeks before the shoot.

Delivery

Casa Padrino ships worldwide from stock and from our workshops. Larger and heavier pieces travel by freight forwarder with a delivery appointment, smaller items by parcel service.

Delivery is made kerbside to the given address. Carrying items into a building, up stairs, into a studio or onto a set is not part of the standard service, so please arrange handling on site. For studios and event venues that is usually straightforward; in historic buildings and restricted city centres it needs planning, and we will say so when the destination calls for it.

Frequently asked questions

Do you hire furniture to productions?
No, we sell. On a long shoot or across several productions, buying usually costs less than accumulated rental, and the pieces remain a reusable asset. For a single short job in a city with a well stocked prop house, hire may be the better route, and we will say so.

What is available at short notice?
Whatever is in stock, which covers most of the pieces productions ask for. Tell us the date at the first enquiry and we will separate what can arrive in time from what needs production lead time.

Can you supply forty identical chairs?
Yes, produced to order and quoted as a project. Quantity and date decide each other, so give us both together.

Which pieces work best on camera?
Anything with real depth: hand carving, gold leaf, deep buttoned upholstery, cut crystal, aged mirror glass. A large mirror is often the most valuable single object on a small set because it doubles the apparent space.

Are the pieces robust enough for repeated handling?
Our classical range is built on solid timber frames with real joinery and layered upholstery, which is what survives being moved between set-ups. This is a genuine difference from furniture built on stapled board.

Can furniture be finished in a specific colour?
Yes. Fabrics, finishes and woods can be specified, and pieces can be built to a drawing. This is the usual route for brand activations and for period sets that need consistency across several rooms.

Do you supply reproductions of specific historical pieces?
We build to a drawing or a reference, in the historical forms our workshops work in. We do not copy a protected contemporary design, and we do not use another manufacturer's model names.

Can a piece be built so it fits through a narrow door or a lift?
Yes. Seating in sections, tables with removable tops and cabinets sized to a measured route are all standard bespoke requests. Send us the route dimensions with the enquiry.

Do you work with event agencies and production designers directly?
Yes, and that is the usual arrangement. Agencies, set decorators, property buyers and interior design studios are a core part of our customer base.

How does an enquiry work?
Send us the set or the rooms, the date, the quantity and the access route. You receive a selection with alternatives, material information and a delivery estimate, and for larger jobs a written offer covering the whole scheme. Enquiries in English, German and French are handled directly.
