For twelve days every May, Cannes turns into the most photographed set of rooms in the world. Grand hotel salons become press lounges, beach restaurants become dinner venues, apartments on the Croisette become brand suites, and every one of those rooms has to look finished on camera by the time the first guest arrives. What actually happens in Cannes in May

The festival was conceived in the late 1930s as a French answer to Venice, interrupted by the war, and finally held for the first time in 1946. It has run each spring since, and it long ago outgrew the screenings. The Palais des Festivals sits at the western end of the Croisette; around it, the Marche du Film runs as the largest film market in the world, with buyers, sellers, production companies and national pavilions occupying every available square metre of the seafront.

That is the part outsiders underestimate. For every red carpet there are dozens of rooms that have to work: hospitality suites in the grand hotels, private dinners in villas above the bay, terraces taken over by studios and streaming platforms for the fortnight, press lounges where the same two armchairs will appear in several hundred published photographs. Cannes in May is a city of temporary interiors built to a fixed date.

The city empties again in June, and much of that furniture goes on to a second life: in the same hotels through the summer season, in the apartments that were furnished for the fortnight and are lived in afterwards, or in storage until the yachting show in September and the television market in the autumn. Buying for a festival is therefore rarely buying for one week, and the pieces that work best are the ones that survive that double duty.

Furniture that has to work on camera

An interior built for a festival is judged differently from a private living room, and there are four practical differences worth knowing before ordering.

It will be photographed, not just used. Cameras are unkind to flat surfaces and thin materials. Carved detail, real gilding, deep buttoning and cut crystal all read on a lens, while a printed finish or a moulded shell looks exactly like what it is. This is the main reason baroque and Art Deco pieces keep reappearing at these events: they hold their shape in a photograph taken from across a room.

It will be used hard, for a short time. A press lounge chair is sat in several hundred times in ten days. Frames need to be solid wood rather than stapled board, and upholstery needs to be built in layers over webbing, not stretched over foam.

It has to arrive before a fixed date. There is no useful version of late. We plan festival orders backwards from the date, which usually means confirming stock availability first and only then discussing anything that needs production time.

It has to get in. Croisette buildings have small lifts, service entrances with restricted hours, and streets closed to traffic during the festival. A sofa that cannot be carried in is not a sofa, it is a problem. We ask about the access route before the order, not after.

The rooms of a festival, and what furnishes them

The gala dinner is the most demanding. A long table, chairs that look identical from every angle and stay comfortable through four courses, candelabra, and light from above. Our dining tables, chairs and crystal chandeliers are used for exactly this.

The reception and lounge area carries the arrival. Velvet sofas, gilded baroque armchairs and tall mirrors do the work here, because they make a room feel established within a day of being installed.

The press and interview corner is the smallest and the most reproduced: two facing luxury armchairs, a low table, a backdrop. It is worth more attention than its size suggests, because it will appear in more images than the ballroom.

The hospitality suite needs to feel residential rather than corporate: a sofa, a good mirror, considered lighting, one substantial piece.

Furniture as set dressing for film and television

Away from the festival itself, a steady part of our business is furniture bought for productions. Set decorators and property buyers come to us for the same reason event organisers do: we hold a wide range of period-looking pieces in stock, and stock is what a shooting schedule needs.

Typical requirements we are asked for include carved and gilded salon furniture for period drama, high-backed throne style armchairs for court and fantasy scenes, Chesterfield seating for club and study interiors, large ornate mirrors that give a camera depth, chandeliers and candelabra for candlelit scenes, and painted commodes and consoles that fill a wall convincingly.

Two things matter to a production buyer beyond the look. The pieces have to be available now, and they have to be robust enough to be moved repeatedly between set-ups. Solid frames, real timber and proper joinery all matter more on a set than they do in a living room, because a set piece is carried, turned and repositioned dozens of times.

Because we sell rather than hire, productions that buy from us keep the pieces afterwards, which is often cheaper than repeated rental across a long shoot, and the furniture can be resold or reused on the next production. Materials and craftsmanship

Solid mahogany, oak and walnut form the structural basis of most of our classical pieces. Carving is done by hand, gilding is applied as leaf rather than sprayed, and upholstery is built up in layers on a solid frame instead of over a moulded shell. Marble is selected as a slab rather than ordered by the square metre, which is why two of our marble tables are never identical.

Metalwork runs from polished brass and antique bronze to wrought iron worked in the old way. Glass and crystal components for chandeliers are cut, not pressed. On a set or under event lighting those differences are visible, which is the practical argument for them.

Bespoke production and quantity

Events and productions regularly need something the catalogue does not hold: twenty identical chairs rather than the twelve in stock, a table built to the length of a specific room, a piece in a house colour, or a copy of a historical form for a period scene. We adjust dimensions, change woods and finishes, work to a specified fabric, and build individual pieces from a drawing.

Delivery to Cannes and the Cote d'Azur

Casa Padrino ships worldwide, and France is one of our established markets. Deliveries to Cannes, Nice, Antibes, Monaco and Saint-Tropez are routine. Larger and heavier pieces travel by freight forwarder with a delivery appointment, smaller items by parcel service.

Delivery is made kerbside to the given address. Carrying items into the building, up stairs or into the room of use is not part of the standard service, so please arrange help on site in advance. During the festival fortnight this needs planning further ahead than usual, because parts of the Croisette are closed to traffic and hotel service entrances work to restricted delivery windows.

Do you rent furniture for an event?
No, we sell. For a recurring event or a production company working across several projects, buying usually costs less over two or three uses than hiring, and the pieces remain an asset afterwards.

What about access on the Croisette during the festival?
Plan it early. Streets are closed, service entrances have restricted delivery windows, and lifts in older seafront buildings are small. Send us the access details with the enquiry and we will tell you what fits.

Can furniture be matched to a brand or production colour?
Yes. Fabrics, finishes and woods can be specified, and pieces can be built to a drawing. This is the usual route for brand suites and for period sets that need consistency across several rooms.

Do you also furnish the villas and apartments used during the festival?
