The Grimaldi family took the fortress on the rock in 1297, and their descendants still govern from the palace that grew out of it. That rock, Monaco-Ville, is the old Principality: narrow lanes, the cathedral, the palace square, buildings in pale stone that have been standing for centuries.

Everything that made Monaco famous came much later and lies on the other side of the harbour. In 1863 the Societe des Bains de Mer opened the casino on the plateau of Les Spelugues, and the architect Charles Garnier, who was building the Paris opera house at the same time, gave it the front it still has. The quarter took the name Monte-Carlo, the Hotel de Paris and the Cafe de Paris followed, and within a generation a barren headland had become the most concentrated display of Belle Epoque architecture on the Mediterranean.

Between the two lies Port Hercule, the natural harbour that the Grand Prix has circled since 1929 and that fills each September with the yacht show. Behind it La Condamine climbs the slope in tight terraces. To the west Fontvieille stands entirely on land reclaimed from the sea in the 1970s. To the east Larvotto holds the beach and, above it, the towers.

Those towers are the point. Monaco could not spread outwards, so it built upwards and outwards into the water, and the result is a housing stock split between Belle Epoque apartments with real ceiling height and modern high-rise floors where every centimetre has been costed. Why space changes everything about furnishing here

In a Monaco apartment furniture is not decoration, it is planning. A sofa that is fifteen centimetres too deep costs a walkway. A dining table that cannot be reduced blocks a room that also has to work as an office. A wardrobe that will not fit the service lift has to be built in place or not at all.

That leads to three practical rules we apply to every Monegasque project. Measure the route before the room: lift depth, door widths, the turn on the landing. Prefer pieces that can be delivered in parts and assembled inside. And use height, because the one dimension that is not scarce in a Belle Epoque apartment is upwards, which is why tall mirrors, high-backed seating and vertical cabinets work so well here.

The second consideration is light. Monaco faces south and east, the sea reflects, and the balconies that define the towers throw shifting shade across a room all day. Textiles fade, untreated timber lightens. Materials and craftsmanship

Solid mahogany, oak and walnut form the structural basis of most of our classical pieces. Carving is done by hand, gilding is applied as leaf rather than sprayed, and upholstery is built up in layers on a solid frame instead of over a moulded shell. Marble is selected as a slab rather than ordered by the square metre, which is why two of our marble tables are never identical.

Metalwork runs from polished brass and antique bronze to wrought iron worked in the old way. Glass and crystal components for chandeliers are cut, not pressed. Behind that stands long experience with European workshops in Italy, Spain, Portugal and eastern Europe. Where a project needs something the catalogue does not contain, those same workshops build it.

Bespoke production: the usual answer in Monaco

In a place where square metres are this valuable, standard dimensions are rarely the right ones. Bespoke production is not a luxury add-on here, it is the normal route. We adjust dimensions, change woods and finishes, work to a specified fabric, and build individual pieces from a drawing.

That includes the practical constraints: a sofa built in two parts because the lift will not take it whole, a table sized to the exact centimetre of an alcove, a wardrobe front matched to an existing panelling. Larger projects begin with the plans, continue with material samples, and end with a fixed delivery date.

Delivery to Monaco and the Cote d'Azur

Casa Padrino ships worldwide, and deliveries to Monaco, Cap d'Ail, Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, Menton, Nice and Cannes are routine. Larger and heavier pieces travel by freight forwarder with a delivery appointment, smaller items by parcel service.
