A fishing village the painters found

In 1892 the painter Paul Signac sailed into the gulf, meant to stay a night, and bought a house instead. He brought others: Matisse painted here in 1904, Bonnard, Marquet, Camoin followed. What drew them was specific and it is still there. Saint-Tropez faces north across its gulf rather than south into the open sea, so the light arrives reflected off the water rather than straight down, and it holds a clarity through the afternoon that the rest of the coast does not have. The town's museum, the Annonciade, is one of the finest small collections of that period anywhere, precisely because the painters kept what they made here.

The second discovery came sixty years later, when Roger Vadim filmed here in 1956 and Brigitte Bardot bought La Madrague. That turned a working port into a destination, and the transformation has never really reversed.

What most visitors do not know is that the harbour they photograph is a reconstruction. Saint-Tropez was heavily destroyed in August 1944 during the Allied landings, and the coloured houses along the Quai Jean Jaures were rebuilt afterwards in the old proportions. That is worth knowing when furnishing here: behind many of those facades the structure is post-war, with straighter walls and more usable ceiling heights than the exterior suggests.

The quarters differ sharply. La Ponche, the old fishermen's district behind the harbour, has narrow houses with thick walls and small windows. The light the painters came for, and what it does to furniture

The quality Signac chased is a real physical property, and it cuts both ways. Reflected light off the gulf fills a north-facing room evenly all afternoon, which flatters texture: velvet, aged brass, patinated wood and unpolished marble all look their best here. It is a gentler light than Cannes gets, and it makes deep colours read as rich rather than heavy.

On the south and west sides of the peninsula, though, the sun is unfiltered and relentless from June to September. There textiles fade fast, untreated timber lightens within a season, and anything with a thin printed finish shows it. The practical rule we give clients here: know which way the room faces before choosing the upholstery, because in Saint-Tropez two rooms in the same house can need opposite answers.

Then there is the pine. Umbrella pines shade almost every terrace on the peninsula and they drop resin and needles for months. Materials and craftsmanship

Solid mahogany, oak and walnut form the structural basis of most of our classical pieces. Carving is done by hand, gilding is applied as leaf rather than sprayed, and upholstery is built up in layers on a solid frame instead of over a moulded shell. Marble is selected as a slab rather than ordered by the square metre, which is why two of our marble tables are never identical.

Metalwork runs from polished brass and antique bronze to wrought iron worked in the old way. Glass and crystal components for chandeliers are cut, not pressed. On a peninsula where salt, sun and resin all work on a surface, those differences are the reason a piece still looks right after ten summers.

Village houses in La Ponche offer almost nothing standard: walls are rarely straight, staircases turn tightly, and doorways were built for people rather than for sofas. Villas on the peninsula have the opposite issue, wide openings and long walls that swallow ordinary furniture.
