Armchair in the Bedroom: The Right Position Between Bed and Wardrobe

Armchair in the Bedroom: Which Position Between Bed and Wardrobe

Many people want to use their bedroom not only for sleeping, but also as a retreat for reading or relaxing. An armchair can be the ideal addition for this purpose. But where exactly should you place it so that it does not get in the way and the room still looks harmonious? The position between bed, wardrobe and window needs to be carefully considered so that walkways remain clear and the armchair fulfils its purpose.

The Classic Spot by the Window

The most popular position for a reading chair is the window area. There you benefit from daylight and can enjoy the view outside. A distance of at least 40 cm from the wall is ideal so that you can comfortably reach behind it, for example to open curtains. If you place the armchair at an angle to the window, the arrangement appears less static and you can look both outside and into the room. A small side surface for a book or cup should be within reach.

Observe Distance to the Bed

At least 60 cm of free space should remain between the armchair and bed, preferably 80 cm, so that you can comfortably walk around both pieces of furniture. If the armchair is too close to the foot of the bed, access to the wardrobe door will be blocked. With Beds that have storage drawers or pull-out slatted frames, you even need 90 to 100 cm distance so that you can use the function. An armchair positioned to the side next to the headboard, for example in a corner of the room, usually interferes least with walkways.

Wardrobe Doors Must Swing Freely

Make sure that wardrobe doors can open fully without hitting the armchair. For a hinged-door wardrobe with a 90-degree opening, allow at least 70 cm of free space in front of the door. Sliding-door wardrobes are less complicated here because they do not require a swing area. If the wardrobe is opposite the window, you can often place the armchair to the side of it without affecting functionality. If in doubt, measure the door width and mark the swing area on the floor with masking tape.

Coordinate Room Size and Armchair Format

In bedrooms under 14 square metres, a compact armchair with a seat width of up to 70 cm is recommended. Wing chairs or club chairs with wide armrests quickly take up 90 cm or more and visually dominate small rooms. The selection of Armchairs ranges from slender cocktail chairs to generous relaxation chairs, so you can adapt the format to your room size. In larger bedrooms from 18 square metres onwards, the armchair may also be combined with a footstool, in which case you should plan for a total of around 120 cm of floor space.

Use Corners, Keep Passageways Clear

Room corners are often underestimated locations for armchairs. There they do not obstruct walkways and create a cosy reading corner. The distance from the wall should be at least 10 cm so that air can circulate and upholstery does not become mouldy. Avoid placing the armchair directly in the main walkway between door and bed. This should remain at least 80 cm wide so that you do not bump into anything even in the dark. A diagonal orientation can help to integrate the armchair in a space-saving way without cutting up the room.
