Dining Table with Bench: Which Width for Children and Adults

Dining Table with Bench: Which Width for Children and Adults

You are planning a dining area with a bench and wondering how wide the table needs to be so that everyone can sit comfortably. The correct width depends on whether mainly adults, children, or both groups will be seated at the table. Too narrow becomes cramped, too wide makes passing dishes difficult. In this article you will learn which dimensions have proven effective in practice and what you should consider when combining table and bench.

Minimum Width for Adults: 80 cm as a Guide

For two adults sitting opposite each other, a table width of at least 80 cm is considered the lower limit. This value accounts for 30 cm depth for the plate and cutlery on each side, plus approximately 20 cm central zone for serving dishes or decoration. It becomes more comfortable from 90 cm width onwards, especially if you like working with larger plates or serving platters. With Dining Tables over 100 cm width, additional space is created, although passing items across the table then becomes more laborious.

Children Need Less Space: 60 to 70 cm Often Suffice

If a child sits opposite an adult or if children use the table exclusively, 60 to 70 cm width is often sufficient. Children's plates are smaller, arms shorter, and table manners not yet so developed. A narrower table also makes it easier for children to reach for glasses or the bread basket independently. If the family grows or the table is to serve adults later, the standard width of 80 cm is recommended from the start.

Bench Depth and Leg Room: How Everything Fits Together

The bench itself should be 35 to 40 cm deep so that one sits comfortably without tipping backwards. Between the front edge of the bench and the table edge, ideally 20 to 25 cm distance remains so that the thighs do not bump. If the bench stands freely in the room, calculate at least 120 cm width for the entire dining area: table width plus twice the bench depth plus movement space. Against the wall, half the depth on one side suffices.

Mixed Use: Flexible Planning with 85 to 90 cm

If children and adults regularly sit together at the table, a width of 85 to 90 cm has proven effective as a compromise. Adults have sufficient space, children can still reach the centre easily. If you combine the bench with individual Chairs on the opposite side, you gain flexibility: chairs are easier to move, and you can compensate for different seat heights with cushions. Ensure that table and bench match in seat height, typical dimensions are 45 to 48 cm for the bench and 74 to 78 cm table height.

Material Tips: Solid Wood Tolerates Minor Impacts

Especially with children, a robust material is recommended. Solid wood withstands stress and can be sanded down in case of scratches. Lacquered or veneered surfaces are easier to maintain but show every impact more clearly. A table width of 90 cm offers enough surface to occasionally do crafts or homework without the dining table losing its function.
