Row of chairs against the wall: when it creates order and when it looks stiff
You have several chairs and are wondering whether to place them against the wall or distribute them freely around the room. A row against the wall can be practical, but quickly looks like a waiting room. When does this arrangement make sense, and when does it make a room uncomfortable? The answer depends on the room size, usage and furnishing.
In small rooms, the wall row creates space
In hallways, entrance areas or narrow dressing rooms, a row of chairs against the wall is often the best solution. It keeps the centre clear, so you can move around without having to walk around furniture. Particularly with a room width of under 2.50 metres, every free area is valuable. Here the arrangement does not look stiff, but tidy and functional.
For changing needs: flexible and quickly rearranged
If you only need chairs occasionally, for example for guests or larger gatherings, the wall is a good parking spot. They stand ready there without disturbing everyday life, and can be quickly pulled up to the table when needed. This solution is suitable for dining rooms where only two to three people eat daily, but six or eight places are regularly needed. When the row looks stiff and unwelcoming

If you decide on a row, the spacing should be even. A guideline: 10 to 15 centimetres between the chairs, so they do not look cramped, but also no gaps appear. With four chairs on a 3 metre long wall, there remains enough space for a harmonious impression. Symmetry also helps: do not start the row directly in the corner, but leave the same distance to the wall on the left and right.
