Garden Furniture Under Trees: Materials, Moss and Leaf Fall
Those who plan their seating area in the shade of large trees enjoy natural coolness and a special ambience. At the same time, leaf fall, moisture and moss formation place particular demands on furniture and care. Which materials are suitable for shady locations? How do you prevent green deposits, and how often should you clean? This guide provides you with concrete advice for choosing furniture under trees.
Which Materials Withstand Moisture and Shade
Under trees, humidity is usually higher because sun and wind penetrate less. Teak wood, stainless steel and aluminium are the first choice here. Teak contains natural oils that inhibit fungal growth. Stainless steel does not rust and is easy to wipe clean. Aluminium remains lightweight and corrosion-free. Poly rattan tolerates shade well, provided it is UV-stabilised, because diffuse light also acts in partial shade. Untreated pine wood or MDF panels, however, swell and should be avoided.
Preventing Moss and Green Deposits
On horizontal surfaces, moss settles with persistent moisture, especially on rough wood or stone. A slight incline of the seating surface of two to three degrees allows rainwater to drain off. Smooth surfaces such as lacquered metal or oiled hardwood offer spores less grip. Clean table tops and armrests every four to six weeks with warm water and a soft brush. Avoid pressure washers on wood, as they roughen the fibres and give moss even more grip. An impregnation with hard wax oil in spring provides additional protection for wooden furniture.
Managing Leaf Fall and Resin
Under deciduous trees, leaves accumulate in crevices and on cushions in autumn, under conifers resin sticks to surfaces. Cover Garden Furniture during the main falling period with breathable tarpaulins so that leaves do not rot. Remove resin stains with white spirit or special resin remover, not with abrasive cleaners. Check whether falling branches or cones could damage the furniture and choose the location accordingly. A position two to three metres from the trunk provides shade without roots lifting the ground.
Care and Winter Storage
Even resistant materials benefit from regular care. Check screws and connections every six months, as moisture causes metal to work. Oil wooden furniture once a year, preferably in spring before the season. Store all furniture dry and frost-free over winter, unless the manufacturer guarantees frost resistance.
