Mirror Above the Chest of Drawers: How Much Distance and What Width
You have purchased a chest of drawers and would like to hang a mirror above it. But how much space should remain between the furniture and the mirror? And how wide may the mirror be in relation to the chest of drawers? Many people ask themselves these questions when designing their walls. The right proportions ensure that the chest of drawers and mirror form a visual unit and the room appears harmonious.
The Right Distance to the Chest of Drawers
As a rule of thumb, a distance of 10 to 20 centimetres between the top edge of the chest of drawers and the bottom edge of the mirror applies. This gap provides enough space to place decorative objects such as vases, candlesticks or small sculptures on the chest of drawers without them visually merging with the mirror. For very tall chests of drawers or if you are not planning any decoration, 8 centimetres may also suffice. More than 25 centimetres usually appears too distant, so that the chest of drawers and mirror no longer seem to belong together.
Choosing the Appropriate Mirror Width
The width of the mirror should be based on the width of the chest of drawers. Ideally 60 to 80 percent of the chest of drawers width. For a 120 centimetre wide chest of drawers, a mirror with a width of 70 to 95 centimetres would be a good choice. A mirror that is too narrow gets lost above a wide piece of furniture, while a mirror that is too wide visually overwhelms the chest of drawers. In modern interiors, the mirror may also be exactly the same width, which creates a clear, graphic effect.
Consider Hanging Height and Eye Level
The total height of chest of drawers plus distance plus mirror should be chosen so that the mirror is usable when standing. The centre of the mirror should ideally be at eye level, approximately 160 to 170 centimetres from the floor. With an 85 centimetre high chest of drawers and 15 centimetres distance, the mirror begins at 100 centimetres height. An 80 centimetre high mirror then reaches up to 180 centimetres, which works for most people. This calculation helps you determine the appropriate mirror size before purchase.
Frame Style and Proportions
The frame of the mirror significantly influences the effect. Wide, ornamental frames in Baroque or Art Nouveau style require more visual space and should tend towards the narrower side of the recommended width. Narrow frames or frameless Mirrors can be dimensioned more generously. Ensure that the frame colour and style match the chest of drawers or create a deliberate contrast. With dark furniture, light or golden frames create an appealing accent.
Practical Notes on Installation
Before installation, check the wall condition and use suitable plugs and screws for the weight of the mirror. Large Commodes with heavy marble tops or solid wood can also accommodate a correspondingly weighty mirror above them. Measure the position several times and mark the drill holes with pencil. A spirit level guarantees that the mirror hangs straight. For very heavy mirrors, hanging at two points instead of one central hook is recommended to distribute the load evenly.
Utilising Light and Spatial Effect
A mirror above the chest of drawers reflects light and makes the room appear larger. Position the chest of drawers opposite a window or light source if possible, so that the mirror reflects this brightness back into the room. In narrow hallways or small bedrooms, this arrangement enhances the spatial depth. However, avoid placing the mirror so that it directly reflects onto a door or an untidy shelf.
