Planter Boxes as Privacy Screens: Which Height and Which Spacing
Those who wish to create undisturbed privacy on their terrace or balcony without erecting a permanent wall often turn to planted containers. But how tall must the vessels be to actually block views? Which spacing between individual containers makes sense? And which plants are suitable for effective, living privacy screening? Many people seeking a flexible yet decorative solution ask themselves these questions.
The Right Height for Effective Privacy Screening
What matters is not the height of the container alone, but the total height of vessel plus plant. For privacy screening while seated, for example on the terrace, 120 to 140 cm total height is usually sufficient. Those who wish to be protected while standing should aim for at least 180 to 200 cm. The container itself should be between 60 and 90 cm tall so that the roots have sufficient space and the plant stands stable. Taller containers also offer the advantage of having visual weight and not tipping over when wind picks up.
Spacing Between Containers
To prevent gaps through which neighbours or passers-by can see, the spacing between containers is crucial. For narrow, upright-growing plants such as bamboo or columnar cypresses, 40 to 60 cm spacing from container centre to container centre is sufficient. Broader-growing shrubs or grasses can be placed with 80 to 100 cm spacing, as they spread laterally and close the gaps naturally. Those who want immediate dense privacy screening choose narrower spacing or larger plants, but must then plan for more containers.
Suitable Plants for Container Privacy Screening
Not every plant is suitable for cultivation in containers and as privacy screening at the same time. Evergreen shrubs such as cherry laurel, yew or privet remain opaque year-round. Bamboo grows quickly and densely, but requires a rhizome barrier even in containers to prevent spreading. Grasses such as Chinese silver grass or pampas grass offer airy privacy screening and are easy to maintain. It is important that the plant is frost-hardy if the containers are to remain outdoors year-round, and that the vessel is large enough so that the roots do not freeze.
Material and Stability of Containers
For outdoor use, the Flower Pots should be frost-proof and stable. Plastic is light and inexpensive, but offers little stability for tall plants. Terracotta and ceramic are decorative, but can crack in frost if they are not glazed or specially treated. Fibreglass, metal or concrete are robust, weatherproof and heavy enough not to tip over even in wind. A water drain in the base is essential to prevent waterlogging.
Care and Watering
Plants in containers dry out more quickly than in beds, especially in sunny, windy locations. In summer, daily watering may be necessary, in winter it is often sufficient to water only during frost-free weather. A drainage layer of expanded clay or gravel at the container base prevents waterlogging. Fertiliser should be given regularly but sparingly, as excess nutrient salts cannot seep away in the closed vessel. Pruning in spring keeps plants compact and promotes dense growth.
Design and Combination
Privacy screening need not appear monotonous. Different container shapes, colours or heights create variety, as long as the overall height is correct. A mixture of evergreen shrubs and seasonally flowering perennials is also possible if the basic structure remains opaque. Matching Garden Decoration such as lanterns, spheres or small sculptures between the containers lighten the appearance and make the arrangement less rigid. It is important that the containers visually complement each other and harmonise with the architecture of the house or terrace.
