Side Table at Sofa End: What Height Relative to Armrest
You would like to place a side table next to your sofa and are wondering how high it should be in relation to the armrest. The correct height determines whether you can comfortably reach for your cup or have to stretch each time. The shape of the armrest also plays a role: flat upholstered, narrow or wide rounded. In this article you will learn which dimensions have proven themselves in practice and what you should pay attention to when making your selection.
The Basic Rule: Table Height Equal to Armrest or Slightly Below
As a rule of thumb, the top edge of the side table should be at the same height as the top edge of the armrest or remain up to 5 cm below it. This allows you to place and pick up objects comfortably without having to raise your arm. On most Sofas, the armrest is between 55 and 65 cm above the floor. A side table with a height of 55 to 60 cm therefore fits well in most cases. If the armrest is particularly low, such as with modern lounge sofas, you should choose a correspondingly flatter table.
Why a Table That Is Too High Is Impractical
If the table protrudes significantly above the armrest, placing and reaching becomes unnatural. You have to raise your arm, which is uncomfortable in the long run. In addition, a table that is too high appears visually unharmonious because it visually overwhelms the sofa. A difference of more than 5 cm upwards should be avoided. With very wide armrests, a somewhat lower table can even be advantageous so that the surface is not too far from the seating area.
Width and Depth of the Table
In addition to the height, you should also consider the base area. A side table at the sofa end ideally has a width of 30 to 50 cm so that it does not protrude into the room. The depth depends on the sofa depth: 30 to 40 cm are common. Make sure that the table is not wider than the armrest, otherwise the composition appears unbalanced. With Side Tables with a round top, a diameter of 35 to 45 cm is often sufficient to provide adequate surface area.
Material and Stability
A side table next to the sofa should be stable, as it is used frequently. Solid wood, metal or marble offer advantages over lightweight plastic models. Check whether the table top rests flat and does not wobble. For tables with a narrow base, additional bracing can be useful. The material should match the style of your sofa: Baroque or Art Nouveau tables harmonize with classic upholstered furniture, modern metal tables with streamlined designs.
Special Case: Armrest as Surface
Some sofas have very wide, flat armrests that themselves serve as a surface. In this case, the side table can also be 5 to 10 cm lower than the armrest, because you place things on the armrest anyway. The table then serves more as a supplement for larger objects or magazines. Make sure that the height difference does not become so large that you have to bend down.
Checklist for the Correct Height
- Measure the armrest from floor to top edge
- Choose a table that is at most 5 cm lower
- Avoid tables that are higher than the armrest
- Check stability by gently shaking
- Ensure that the table width matches the armrest
