Sideboard or Display Cabinet in the Dining Room: Which for What Purpose

In the dining room, you need storage space for crockery, cutlery, table linen and glassware. But should the furniture be closed or display its contents? Both solutions have their justification, depending on what you want to store and how much space you have available. The choice depends on whether you want to store things away or present them.

Sideboards: Closed Storage for Everyday Items

A sideboard offers you closed drawers and compartments in which you can store everything that should not be constantly visible. Tablecloths, placemats, candles, napkin rings and cutlery sets find their place here. Supplies such as napkins or spare crockery can also be discreetly stored away. Commodes are available in widths from 80 to 180 cm, the depth is usually between 40 and 50 cm. Make sure that the top surface serves as a storage area: for a table lamp, a tray or a fruit bowl.

Display Cabinets: Presentation Behind Glass

A display cabinet shows what is important to you. Porcelain services, crystal glasses, collector cups or heirlooms come into their own behind glass and remain protected from dust at the same time. The glass doors allow access without you having to constantly wipe the pieces. Display Cabinets are often taller than sideboards, typically between 160 and 210 cm, and appear lighter in the room due to their transparency. The depth usually corresponds to that of a sideboard, around 35 to 45 cm.

Consider Space and Spatial Effect

In small dining rooms, a display cabinet can visually open up the space because the view falls through the glass. A dark, closed sideboard, on the other hand, appears more solid and is better suited to larger rooms. Measure the available wall space: there should be at least 90 cm between furniture and table so that you can pull out chairs comfortably. For a passageway, allow 120 cm.

Combinations and Mixed Forms

Many pieces of furniture combine both functions: closed drawers or doors at the bottom, glass compartments at the top. This way you can store everyday items and display beautiful things. These highboards or buffets are between 120 and 160 cm high and offer a practical working height of around 90 cm. For a classic dining room in baroque or country house style, such combination furniture is particularly suitable.

Material and Care

Sideboards made of solid wood or veneered wood are robust and easy to dust. Display cabinets require a little more effort because you should clean the glass surfaces regularly. Illuminated from within, display cabinets are particularly inviting in the evening. LED strips consume little electricity and generate no heat that could damage delicate porcelain. Look for adjustable shelves so that you can adapt the height to your items.
