The Right Rug Under Dining Table and Sofa
You are planning the furnishing of your living room or dining room and wondering which rug fits under your furniture? Choosing the right rug size and placement is crucial for the appearance and comfort of the room. A rug that is too small looks lost, one that is too large looks overloaded. This guide shows you which dimensions you should consider and how to optimally position the rug under your dining table and sofa.
Rug Size Under the Dining Table: Plan Space for Chairs
The most common mistake with Dining Tables is a rug that is too small. When you pull out a chair, it should remain completely on the rug. Therefore, calculate at least 60 to 80 cm overhang on each side of the table. For a table measuring 160 x 90 cm, you will need a rug of at least 280 x 210 cm. This rule of thumb applies to all table shapes: rectangular, round or oval.
Material Selection for the Dining Area: Easy Care and Robust
Under the dining table, you should opt for durable materials. Low pile rugs made of wool, polypropylene or viscose are ideal, as chairs can be easily moved over them and crumbs can be simply vacuumed up. High pile or very light coloured rugs are impractical in the dining area. Ensure you have a non slip underlay so that the rug does not shift when moving chairs.
Rug Under the Sofa: Which Option Suits Your Room?
With Sofas, you have three options: the rug can lie completely under the sofa, only the front feet can stand on it, or the sofa stands completely in front of it. For a harmonious appearance, at least the front feet should stand on the rug. With a seating group with coffee table, the rug should be large enough for all furniture to fit with their front feet on it. A distance of 20 to 30 cm between the rug edge and wall appears balanced.
Consider Proportions: Room Size and Rug Format
The rug size should match the room size. In a small living room of 15 to 20 square metres, a rug of 200 x 300 cm is often sufficient. In larger rooms from 30 square metres onwards, 300 x 400 cm or more is appropriate. The rug should clearly define the seating group or dining area, but not cover the entire floor. A visible floor border of at least 20 cm on the sides makes the room appear more spacious.
Colour Choice and Pattern: Coordination with Furniture and Style
The colour of the rug should either form a contrast to the furniture or blend in harmoniously. With dark furniture, light rugs can lighten the room, with light sofas, dark tones create accents. Patterned rugs are particularly suitable for simple furniture, while plain rugs are the better choice with patterned upholstery. Also consider the flooring: on dark parquet, light rugs work particularly well, on tiles, warm colour tones bring cosiness.
Practical Tips for Placement
Position the rug centrally under the furniture group. In rectangular rooms, the rug should lie parallel to the walls. If you are unsure, you can mark the desired area beforehand with masking tape on the floor. This way you can immediately see whether the proportions are correct. Also consider walkways: at least 40 cm should remain free between the rug edge and doors so that doors can open without problems.
