Side Table with Drawer: Which Depth Still Fits Next to the Bed

You are looking for a side table with a drawer for the bedroom and wondering how deep it may be without getting in the way? The depth determines whether you can comfortably reach the bed at night and avoid bumping into the table edge in the morning. At the same time, the surface should be large enough for a lamp, book and water glass. This article shows which dimensions have proven practical and what you should consider when planning.

The Standard Depth: 30 to 40 cm as a Guide

Most Side Tables with a drawer have a depth between 30 and 40 cm. This range offers sufficient space for a bedside lamp with shade, an open book and a glass. At the same time, enough passage remains between bed and table when you get up at night. With a double bed of 180 cm width and a wall distance of 60 cm, tables up to 35 cm depth fit without problem, without narrowing the room.

Narrow Variants for Tight Bedrooms

In small rooms or with beds directly against the wall, models with 25 to 30 cm depth are recommended. These slender tables still offer space for the essentials, but allow more freedom of movement. Make sure that the drawer is not too deep: with a total depth of 25 cm, the drawer should be a maximum of 18 cm deep, so that it opens completely and you can reach in comfortably.

Deeper Models: When 45 cm Makes Sense

Tables with 45 cm or more depth are suitable for spacious bedrooms where the bed stands freely in the room. They offer space for larger lamps, stacks of books or decorative objects. The prerequisite is a wall distance of at least 80 cm, so that you can still pass by comfortably at the side. In period buildings with wide corridors between bed and wall, such furniture can unfold its effect without being obtrusive.

The Drawer Depth: Inside, Usability Counts

The internal depth of the drawer is usually 5 to 8 cm less than the total depth of the table, due to the back panel and guide. With a 35 cm deep table, you get a usable drawer depth of about 27 cm. This is sufficient for paperback books, charging cables, medication and cosmetics. For larger items such as trays or A4 notebooks, you need at least 30 cm internal depth, meaning a table with 38 to 40 cm external dimensions.

Practical Rules of Thumb for Planning

  • Minimum passage next to the bed: 50 cm, preferably 60 cm
  • Table depth with wall distance 60 cm: maximum 35 cm
  • Table depth with wall distance 80 cm: up to 45 cm possible
  • Drawer internal depth: external depth minus 7 cm as a guide
  • Height of the table: 5 to 10 cm above mattress top edge

Consider Material and Construction

With tables made of solid wood or with marble top, the depth is often more generous because the material provides stability. Models with delicate metal legs can appear visually light even at 30 cm depth. Check before purchase whether the drawer runs on full extension: this way you use the entire storage space, even when the table stands close to the wall.
