Sofa on the Short Wall: When This Stretches the Room
Many people automatically place their sofa against the longest wall in the living room. However, positioning it on the short end wall can visually lengthen the room and improve its proportions. Particularly in narrow, corridor-like rooms, this arrangement often creates a more harmonious effect. But when does this solution really work, and what do you need to consider when implementing it?
When the Short Wall Is the Better Choice
A sofa on the short wall is particularly suitable for rooms with an unfavourable length-to-width ratio. If your living room is longer than 5 metres but narrower than 3.5 metres, a corridor effect quickly develops. Furnishing perpendicular to the longitudinal axis interrupts this visual line and makes the room appear more balanced. Even in open floor plans with passage areas, this arrangement can be sensible because it creates natural zone boundaries without blocking the passage.
The Right Sofa Size for the End Wall
The width of the sofa should occupy approximately 60 to 75 per cent of the wall width. For a 3 metre wide end wall, a sofa between 180 and 225 centimetres would be ideal. Models that are too small appear lost, whilst those that are too large overwhelm the proportions. The seating depth also plays a role: models with 90 to 100 centimetres depth extend further into the room and reinforce the room-dividing effect. Shallower Sofas with 80 centimetres depth are more suitable if you wish to keep the passage generous.
Plan Distance to the Opposite Side
At least 120 centimetres of space should remain between the sofa backrest and the opposite wall or furniture front. This distance enables comfortable passage, even when two people need to pass each other. In rooms under 4.5 metres in length, it often becomes tight with a deep sofa on the end wall. Measure in advance whether, after deducting the sofa depth and minimum distance, sufficient space remains for additional furniture such as a coffee table or sideboard.
Consider Sight Lines and Window Light
Check where windows and doors are located. A sofa in front of a large window on the end wall blocks daylight and makes the room darker. The arrangement works better when the short wall is window-free or has only narrow side windows. The viewing direction also matters: do you prefer sitting with a view towards the door or towards the window? The orientation determines whether you see visitors arriving or enjoy the view.
Add Additional Seating Cleverly
When the sofa is positioned crosswise, two room halves often emerge. Use the longer side walls for armchairs, side tables or shelving. This creates a U-shaped seating group that facilitates conversation and structures the room comfortably. Ensure that approximately 40 to 50 centimetres distance remains between all seating furniture and the coffee table, so that one can stand up comfortably. A symmetrical arrangement with one armchair on each long side appears formal, whilst asymmetrical solutions appear more relaxed and modern.
