Which Fountain Suits My Front Garden?
A fountain in the front garden creates a design accent and brings movement to the scene. However, practical questions arise before purchase: How large may the installation be so that it does not appear overwhelming? Which splashing sound is pleasant without disturbing the neighbours? And do I need a fixed water connection or is a pump with circulation sufficient? This article provides guidance for planning.
The Right Size for the Front Garden
As a rule of thumb: the height of the fountain should not exceed one third to a maximum of half the building height in the foreground. For a single-storey house with 3 metres wall height, fountains between 1.00 and 1.50 metres are harmonious. For small front gardens under 20 square metres, compact models up to 80 centimetres height are suitable, while generous areas from 40 square metres can also accommodate substantial column fountains or multi-tiered installations. Ensure that the diameter of the basin matches the total area: a basin of 60 to 80 centimetres diameter appears balanced in most front gardens.
Noise Level and Water Feature
The volume depends on the fall height and pump performance. A gentle splashing occurs when water falls from 20 to 40 centimetres height into a shallow basin. Stronger fountains or cascades with over one metre fall height produce a noticeably louder rushing sound that stands out in quiet residential streets. Modern pumps can be continuously adjusted, allowing you to adapt the intensity to the time of day and situation. In practice, models with 10 to 30 watts performance prove effective for the front garden, delivering an audible but not dominant water sound.
Water Connection or Circulation System
Most Fountains and Water Columns operate with a closed circulation system: an electric pump conveys the water from the catch basin upwards, from where it flows back. A fixed water connection is not necessary; you fill the basin once and compensate for evaporation every few days. A power connection with 230 volts must be nearby, ideally an outdoor socket with residual current circuit breaker. For remote locations, solar-powered variants are available, although their performance is weather-dependent and usually sufficient only for smaller fountains.
Material and Location
Natural stone, concrete, artificial stone and metal are the common materials. Natural stone and concrete are frost-resistant when densely fired or impregnated, and suit classical facades well. Metal, such as stainless steel or corten steel, appears modern and weathers in a controlled manner. The location should be level and load-bearing; for larger Garden Fountains with several hundred litres water content, a compacted subsurface or concrete slab is advisable. Avoid direct proximity to deciduous trees, as falling leaves clog the pump and cloud the water.
Maintenance and Winter Operation
In summer, depending on temperature, half to one litre of water evaporates daily, which you must refill to prevent the pump from running dry. Every four to six weeks you should empty the basin, remove deposits and clean the pump. Before the first frost, drain the installation completely, remove the pump and store it frost-free. Frost-resistant fountains made of solid stone can remain outside but must be free of water, as frozen water splits the material.
