Fountain, Wall Fountain or Water Column: Which Fountain Suits Which Garden

Water in the garden creates atmosphere, cools on hot days and attracts birds. But which fountain design suits your outdoor area? The choice depends on the available space, the style of the garden and the desired effect. This guide shows you what to consider when deciding between a fountain, wall fountain and water column.

The Classic Fountain for Generous Spaces

A fountain requires space and works best as a central element. It is suitable for gardens from around 50 square metres where it can stand freely. Typical diameters range between 80 and 150 centimetres, some models even reach 200 centimetres. The water jet should not be higher than half the diameter of the basin, otherwise too much water splashes over the edge. Garden Fountains are particularly well suited to formal gardens with symmetrical beds or in front of representative entrances. They require level, load-bearing ground and a power connection within a maximum distance of five metres.

Wall Fountains for Narrow Areas and Courtyards

When floor space is limited, a wall fountain is a good option. It is mounted on a house wall, garage wall or garden wall and projects only 30 to 50 centimetres into the space. The width varies between 40 and 100 centimetres. Wall fountains are ideal for terraced house gardens, patios or Mediterranean courtyards. They fit well into country house and baroque styles, but also work in modern outdoor areas with clean lines. Make sure the wall can bear the weight: a filled wall fountain weighs between 30 and 80 kilograms depending on the material.

Water Columns as Space-Saving Alternatives

Water columns stand freely but require significantly less space than fountains. With a footprint of around 40 by 40 centimetres and a height between 80 and 150 centimetres, they also fit into small gardens, on balconies or next to seating areas. The water runs down the surface or emerges from several openings. The selection of Fountains and Water Columns ranges from simple stainless steel columns to ornate baroque columns with decorative elements. Water columns can be positioned flexibly and moved if necessary, provided a power connection is nearby.

Material Selection According to Location and Maintenance Requirements

Cast iron and bronze develop a patina over time and suit historical garden styles. They are frost-resistant but must be emptied in autumn. Natural stone such as granite or marble is durable and hardly weathers, but weighs a lot and requires a stable foundation. Plastic or polyresin is light, frost-proof and easy to maintain, but appears less high-quality. Stainless steel remains permanently shiny and fits into modern gardens, but shows limescale deposits more clearly than dark materials.

Technical Requirements and Water Circulation

All fountain types work with a circulation pump that circulates the water. The pump output should match the fountain volume: for a 100-litre basin, around 500 litres per hour is sufficient. A power connection with residual current circuit breaker is mandatory. Plan for a water connection nearby to compensate for evaporation losses. In summer, this can amount to several litres per week for larger fountains. An overflow protection prevents the basin from overflowing when it rains.

Noise Level and Neighbours

Most people find the splashing of a fountain pleasant, but the volume varies. Fountains with high jets produce more noise than flat water columns. Wall fountains with wide water curtains are quieter than those with thin streams. If you want to position the fountain near the property boundary, choose a model with an adjustable pump. This allows you to adjust the flow rate and thus the volume. In purely residential areas, the midday rest period applies, even though fountains are usually not considered a source of noise.
