A festival born of an idea
In 1975 the founders wanted to bring films to France that only a few had seen in New York or Los Angeles, and to do so without barriers for the audience. That idea grew into one of the most important showcases of American cinema in Europe. Until 1995 the festival ran without a competition; prizes have been awarded since.
Deauville itself belongs to those places that brought their standing with them from the nineteenth century: seaside architecture, grand hotels, the boardwalk along the beach, the proximity to Paris. Among the festival's founding patrons was Lucien Barrière, whose hotel group also runs the house in Cannes on whose private beach Casa Padrino was a guest at the Beach Ball.
Furniture that carries a scene

How a piece of furniture becomes a prop
What makes a piece work on screen is the same thing that makes it work in a villa: proportion, surface, handwork. A throne chair whose carving still holds up from two metres away. A mirror that guides light rather than merely reflecting it. Production at Casa Padrino is largely by hand: furniture in Italy, ceramics by Spanish artisans, brass in Indian workshops, together with solid marble, gold leaf and hand upholstery. Dimensions, materials and finishes can be chosen freely for every project, up to unique one-off pieces.
Film, fashion, architecture, interior
Between premieres and receptions, Deauville made clear how far these four fields have merged into one cultural whole. For Casa Padrino that is not a side stage but the market: the clientele for handcrafted luxury furniture moves in precisely these circles. Deauville sits alongside the Bal de Noël in Monaco, the Vienna Opera Ball and the Cannes Film Festival.
