Console with Marble Top: Which Wall Mounting Is Required

Console with Marble Top: Which Wall Mounting Is Required

You want to mount a console with a marble top on the wall and are wondering which wall plugs and screws are sufficient? The question is justified, because marble weighs considerably more than wood or MDF. Incorrect mounting can cause the furniture to come loose or damage the wall. This article shows you which wall mounting you need depending on the weight and wall type, and what you should pay attention to during installation.

Weight of a Console with Marble Top

A typical console with a marble top weighs between 15 and 40 kilograms, depending on the size and thickness of the top. A top measuring 100 × 40 centimeters and 2 centimeters thick alone weighs approximately 20 kilograms. Add to this the frame made of wood or metal, as well as any decorative items you place on it. Therefore, calculate a total load of at least 30 to 50 kilograms that your wall mounting must support permanently.

Mounting on Solid Walls

In solid brick walls, concrete walls or sand lime brick, expansion plugs with a diameter of 10 millimeters and matching screws are usually sufficient. Use at least four mounting points distributed across the width of the console. Drill the holes at least 60 millimeters deep so that the plug can grip completely. Make sure that the screws are not too short: with a wall bracket 5 millimeters thick, the screw should be at least 70 millimeters long.

Mounting on Hollow Walls and Plasterboard

Plasterboard walls or stud walls require special cavity plugs that expand behind the panel. For Consoles with marble tops, metal toggle bolts with a load capacity of at least 25 kilograms per plug are suitable. Alternatively, you can use cavity screws that grip through several layers of plasterboard. Even more secure is mounting directly into the metal studs or wooden posts of the wall. Use a stud finder to check where the load bearing profiles run and place the screws there.

Number and Distribution of Mounting Points

The number of mounting points depends on the weight and width of the console. As a rule of thumb:

  • Up to 80 centimeters width: at least four mounting points
  • 80 to 120 centimeters width: six mounting points
  • Over 120 centimeters width: eight mounting points

Distribute the points evenly across the width and place two screws one above the other if the console has a high wall bracket. This prevents the furniture from tilting forward.

Additional Security for Heavy Tops

For particularly heavy marble tops from 30 kilograms upwards, additional security is recommended. Use metal brackets that are attached under the top and additionally anchored in the wall. These brackets absorb part of the load and relieve the upper mounting points. Alternatively, you can mount the console on a continuous wall rail that is screwed across the entire width. This distributes the load over more mounting points and increases stability.

Tools and Preparation

For installation you need a hammer drill or rotary hammer, suitable masonry drill bits, a spirit level and a pencil. Mark the drill holes exactly before drilling and check with the spirit level whether the console will hang straight later. Remove the drill dust completely from the holes so that the plugs sit firmly. Tighten the screws evenly without overtightening them so that the material is not damaged.
