Dining Table with Corner Bench: Which Leg Length for Which Room

Anyone planning a corner bench quickly faces the question of how long the two legs should be and how much space the entire dining area will occupy in the room. Unlike freestanding chairs, the corner bench is fixed in position, and the proportions must be right from the start. Legs that are too short look lost, while legs that are too long constrict the space. This article shows which leg lengths are suitable for which room sizes and what you should consider when planning.

Basic Rule: Leg Length Depends on Number of Seats

Allow 60 cm width per person at the seating surface. A corner bench with two legs of 120 cm each provides space for two people per side, four seats in total. If you want to accommodate three people per leg, you need at least 180 cm length. The corner bench itself takes up approximately 50 to 60 cm depth, measured from the wall to the front edge of the seat. Add another 80 to 100 cm for the table and a further 80 cm for the movement space behind it to determine the actual space requirement.

Small Rooms up to 12 Square Metres: Short Legs of 100 to 140 cm

In a kitchen or dining corner of up to approximately 12 square metres, legs of 100 to 140 cm length are suitable. This allows two to three people to sit comfortably, and the room remains open. A square table measuring 90 x 90 cm or a rectangular table measuring 120 x 80 cm harmonises well with this size. Ensure that at least 120 cm remains free between the table edge and the opposite wall, so you can move comfortably and reach the seats at the corner bench.

Medium Rooms up to 18 Square Metres: Legs of 140 to 180 cm

For room sizes between 12 and 18 square metres, leg lengths of 140 to 180 cm work well. Here, three to four people per side can be seated, and the corner bench becomes the central piece of furniture in the room. The selection of Dining Tables ranges from 140 x 90 cm to 180 x 90 cm, depending on whether you wish to combine the corner bench with additional chairs on the opposite side. Plan for at least 80 cm clearance all around, so that all seats remain accessible and no one sits cramped.

Large Rooms from 18 Square Metres: Legs from 180 cm Upwards

In generous dining areas from 18 square metres onwards, the legs may measure 180 cm and more. Such corner benches provide space for five or six people and create an inviting, communicative atmosphere. The table should then be at least 180 x 100 cm, ideally 200 or 220 cm in length. If you work with Chairs on the open side, a flexible seating arrangement for larger gatherings emerges. It is important that the proportions remain balanced and the corner bench does not stand out as a foreign element in the room.

Asymmetrical Legs for Irregular Floor Plans

Not every room is rectangular. If a door, radiator or passageway interrupts the corner, you can work with legs of different lengths. A short leg of 100 cm and a long one of 160 cm adapt to the floor plan and make optimal use of the space. Ensure that the table is positioned centrally to the longer side, so that the seating distribution appears harmonious. This solution is particularly suitable for period buildings or open-plan kitchens with alcoves.

Plan Distance to Wall and Movement Space

Besides leg length, the movement space determines comfort. Behind the corner bench, 10 to 20 cm wall clearance is sufficient, provided the bench is fixed. At least 80 cm should remain free in front of the table edge, preferably 100 cm, so you can stand up and sit down comfortably. To the opposite wall or other furniture, allow another 120 cm to avoid overloading the room. These guidelines apply regardless of style and material and ensure that the corner bench remains practical in everyday use.
