Fountain in Front of the Terrace: What Distance to Seating Furniture

You are planning a fountain near your terrace and wondering how close it may be placed to your seating area. The splashing should have a calming effect, not be disturbing, and the spray must not soak cushions or wood. At the same time, the fountain should remain visible and unfold its effect. The correct distance depends on the size of the fountain, the wind direction and the type of your furniture.

Minimum Distance According to Spray Range and Wind Conditions

As a rule of thumb: the distance between the fountain edge and seating furniture should be at least one and a half times the jet height. For a fountain with an 80 cm high jet, you should therefore calculate a distance of 120 cm. Wind can carry water droplets an additional two to three metres, especially with narrow, high jets. Observe the prevailing wind direction at your location: if the terrace is downwind behind the fountain, add a further 50 to 100 cm buffer. Wide basin fountains with low overflow hardly splash and allow shorter distances from 80 cm.

Material of Furniture and Sensitivity to Moisture

Upholstered furniture with fabric covers, untreated wood or rattan tolerate splashing water poorly. Here a distance of at least 150 cm is recommended, preferably 200 cm, so that no moisture arrives even in gusty wind. Metal, plastic weave or varnished hardwood are less sensitive: 100 to 120 cm are usually sufficient. Check whether your Garden Furniture has a water-repellent impregnation or whether you wish to use protective covers. The terrace floor tiles should also be slip-resistant in case water occasionally reaches there.

Volume and Acoustic Comfort

Water produces different noise levels depending on the drop height. A quiet trickle from 30 cm height remains pleasant even at 80 cm distance. If, however, the water bubbles from one metre height into a shallow basin, the splashing can be perceived as loud at only one metre distance. Test before final installation: sit down at various distances as a trial and let the fountain run for fifteen minutes. Many Garden Fountains can be regulated in pump output, so that you can adjust height and volume.

Sight Line and Design Effect

A fountain unfolds its decorative power best when it remains clearly visible from the seating position without blocking the view into the garden. At a distance of 150 to 250 cm, a medium-sized fountain with 60 to 100 cm diameter appears harmonious in the field of vision without becoming too dominant. If it stands too close, it may obscure flower beds or paths. Also plan access for maintenance and cleaning: at least one side should remain freely accessible without having to climb over furniture.

Power Connection and Practical Installation

The pump requires a socket or a ground-laid connection. Lay the cable so that it does not become a tripping hazard and does not run under seating furniture. A distance of 200 cm to the terrace facilitates cable routing along the bed edge or under floor slabs. Use weatherproof outdoor sockets with residual current circuit breaker and have an electrician check the installation if uncertain. This keeps the fountain safe and the appearance tidy.
