Fountains Without Power Supply: Which Solar Pump Is Sufficient
You want to install a garden fountain, but there is no power outlet at the desired location. A solar pump is a good option, but the selection is large and the technical specifications are confusing. What power does the pump really need to ensure the water flows reliably? And what do you need to consider to ensure the system works even on cloudy days?
Delivery Head and Flow Rate Determine Pump Performance
The most important parameter is the delivery head: it indicates how many metres the pump can transport water upwards. For shallow bowls or spring stones, 0.5 to 1 metre is often sufficient. Column fountains or multi-level cascades require 1.5 to 2.5 metres. The flow rate is specified in litres per hour. For calm water flows, 200 to 400 litres per hour are sufficient, lively fountains require 600 to 1,000 litres per hour. Check both values together: a pump with a high delivery head often delivers only a small flow at the top.
Correctly Dimensioning Solar Panel and Battery Buffer
The pump only runs when the solar panel supplies enough power. For pumps up to 5 watts, a panel with 10 watts nominal output is sufficient. More powerful pumps from 10 watts should be combined with a 20-watt panel. An integrated battery stores energy for shady periods and allows the fountain to continue running in the evening. Models with 2,000 to 3,000 milliampere hours bridge approximately two to four hours without direct sunlight. Without a battery, the pump stops immediately when a cloud covers the panel.
Which Pump Type for Which Fountain Type
Submersible pumps are placed directly in the water basin and are suitable for Fountains and Water Columns where water is transported from bottom to top. They operate quietly and are easy to install. Floating pumps float on the surface and create fountains or bubbling effects, ideal for shallow bowls. External pumps draw water through a hose and can be placed outside the basin, which facilitates maintenance and cleaning. For Garden Fountains with multiple outlet points, a pump with adjustable flow rate is recommended.
Location of Solar Panel and Cable Length
The panel must face south and receive at least five hours of direct sunlight per day. Shade from trees or buildings drastically reduces performance. Many sets offer three to five metres of cable between panel and pump. This is sufficient to mount the panel in a sunny location while the fountain stands in partial shade. Longer cables cause voltage loss: from ten metres onwards, pump performance noticeably decreases. Ensure weatherproof plug connections so that moisture cannot penetrate.
Maintenance and Winter Operation
Clean the solar panel every four weeks with clear water, dust and pollen reduce output by up to 30 per cent. The pump should be removed from the water monthly and freed from algae. In winter, remove pump and panel as soon as frost threatens. Freezing water destroys the mechanism. Store both parts dry and frost-free. Models with lithium-ion batteries must not be operated below zero degrees, otherwise the battery will be permanently damaged.
