Round Garden Table: Which Diameter for How Many Chairs
You are redesigning your patio or garden and wondering what size your round garden table should be? The choice of the right diameter depends directly on how many people should be seated comfortably. A table that is too small appears overloaded, one that is too large wastes valuable space. This guide shows you which dimensions have proven effective for two to eight people and what you should consider when planning.
Basic Rule: 60 cm Width per Person
As a rule of thumb: each person requires approximately 60 cm of table edge to sit and eat comfortably. With round tables, this value is distributed evenly around the circumference. This results in the following guidelines:
- 80 to 90 cm diameter: two to three people
- 100 to 110 cm diameter: four people
- 120 to 130 cm diameter: five to six people
- 140 to 150 cm diameter: six to eight people
These dimensions refer to the pure seating area. Allow an additional 20 cm for dishes and decoration in the centre of the table.
Space Required Around the Table
In addition to the diameter of the table itself, you must plan for space for chairs and movement area. There should be at least 80 cm between the table edge and the wall or flower bed border, preferably 100 cm. This allows people to stand up comfortably without other guests having to push back their chairs. For a table with a 120 cm diameter, you therefore need a total area of at least 280 by 280 cm.
Material and Weather Resistance
Round garden tables are available in wood, metal, plastic or stone. Teak wood and stainless steel are particularly durable and easy to maintain. Models with four legs can be impractical when fully occupied because the table legs are positioned exactly where the chair legs also need space. Before purchasing, check whether your existing chairs fit under the table top and whether there is enough distance between the seat and the underside of the table.
