Buying baroque furniture: what to look for

This guide brings together what really matters when buying baroque furniture. It helps you recognise quality, find the right size and combine pieces with confidence.

For an overview of armchairs, sofas, beds, chests of drawers, mirrors and lighting in the baroque style, visit our page Baroque furniture by Casa Padrino, where every category is gathered in one place.

What defines baroque furniture

Baroque is a style of movement, abundance and grandeur. Its signature features are sweeping curves rather than straight lines, carved ornaments such as acanthus leaves, shells, scrolls and rocaille work, boldly profiled cornices and curved legs that often end in claw or scroll feet. Seating has tall, framed backrests and generous upholstery, chests of drawers have a gently swelling body, and mirrors sit in wide, richly decorated frames.

When you buy, remember that a good baroque piece looks right from every angle. The carving should be crisp, the curves should flow evenly and the proportions should feel balanced. Ask for photos from several angles and close-ups of the ornaments.

Materials and craftsmanship

With baroque furniture, the material determines stability, weight and lifespan. Solid wood is the preferred basis for frames, carcasses and mirror surrounds, because it carves well and keeps its shape for years. Ask what the frame, back panel and drawers are made of, and read the product description carefully.

The second point to check is the finish in the details. Drawers should run smoothly and straight, doors should close cleanly and fittings should sit firmly.

Typical baroque upholstery fabrics are velvet, brocade, damask and leather. Velvet looks rich, leather is hard-wearing and develops a patina.

Choosing finishes and colours

The finish defines the character of a baroque piece more than almost anything else. Gilded and silvered surfaces are classic, because they highlight the carving and catch the light. Alongside them you will find dark wood tones, black, white, cream and antique finishes with visible patina.

For colour there is a simple rule: the stronger the upholstery colour, the calmer the surroundings should be. An armchair in burgundy, emerald or royal blue with a gold frame looks its best against a quiet wall. Grey, cream and silver blend easily into contemporary rooms.

Dimensions and room planning

Baroque furniture is often more generously sized than modern furniture. Measure not only the floor space but also the ceiling height and every door, staircase and lift the piece has to pass through on delivery.

Plan for space to move. A simple trick is to mark the outline of the piece on the floor with masking tape, so you can see how much space it takes before you order. A dark, richly carved piece also looks larger than a pale one of the same size.

Combining baroque pieces with confidence

A baroque room does not have to look like a palace. Many customers start with a single focal point, such as a mirror above a chest of drawers, a wing chair by the window or a chandelier over the dining table, and build the room from there.

Repeat colours and finishes on purpose. If an armchair has a gilded frame, let a picture frame, a lamp or a set of handles pick up the same tone.

Baroque also works very well alongside modern design. A baroque mirror above a plain sideboard creates an appealing tension. Lighting, mirrors and accessories to complete the look are also part of our baroque collection.

Care that keeps the splendour

With the right care, baroque furniture lasts a very long time. Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth or a fine brush that reaches into the recesses of the carving. Never clean gilded or silvered surfaces with water, harsh products or scouring pads.

Wood responds to its environment. Where possible, keep furniture away from radiators and strong direct sunlight, and aim for steady humidity. Refresh velvet with a soft brush and leather with a suitable care product. Treat stains straight away by dabbing rather than rubbing.

Bespoke pieces and complete interiors

Sometimes a piece from the range does not quite fit an alcove, a particular ceiling height or the colour scheme of a house. For these cases Casa Padrino also makes furniture to order, in matched dimensions, colours and upholstery. You can read how this works on our page bespoke furniture process.

We also furnish entire private homes, hotels, restaurants and bars, working closely with architects and interior designers. Please note that custom-made pieces are excluded from the statutory right of withdrawal, so we agree all dimensions and details with you carefully before you order.
