Casa Padrino quality: how to judge the craftsmanship of luxury furniture
Demotex GmbH · Essen · since 2007
A luxury piece of furniture is bought to last for many years. Before choosing a baroque armchair, an upholstered bed or a carved chest of drawers, most people want to know what lies beneath the surface: how the frame is built, how fine the carving is, how the finish was applied and how the upholstery will feel after years of use. This page is about exactly that. We explain how to recognise Casa Padrino quality, and the quality of fine furniture in general, and how you can check it yourself before you buy.
Casa Padrino is the furniture brand of Demotex GmbH in Essen, Germany. Since 2007 we have designed and sold luxury furniture in baroque, Art déco and classic style, together with lighting, mirrors, accessories, garden furniture and sculptures. We furnish private homes, hotels, restaurants and bars, and we make bespoke pieces to order.
What quality looks like in luxury furniture
Fine furniture stands out less through one spectacular detail than through coherence. Proportions are balanced, lines run cleanly, and the transitions between wood, fabric and metal look deliberate. A well built piece stands firmly, does not wobble or creak under normal use and has a weight that suits its size.
What you do not see at first glance matters just as much: the back, the underside, the inside of drawers and doors. Makers who care about quality treat these surfaces with the same attention. So always look at a piece from every side.
Wood and frame: the foundation of every piece
The frame carries everything you see later. In solid wood furniture the load-bearing parts are made of natural timber throughout. It is heavy, stable and can be restored if needed. There are also constructions made of engineered wood panels that are veneered or lacquered. Both can be well made. What counts is that the description is honest and the construction suits the purpose. A chair that is moved every day needs different joints from a display cabinet standing against a wall.
Look closely at the joints. Are rails and legs mortised, dowelled or only screwed? Are there corner blocks that brace a chair? Do the seams run evenly, without traces of glue? Drawers reveal a lot: one that runs straight and smoothly without catching is a good sign.

Carving: depth, crispness and symmetry
In baroque furniture the carving is the heart of the piece. Good carving has depth: leaves, scrolls and shells stand out in relief, edges are crisp and transitions are soft. Flat, blurred ornaments in which every detail seems to sit at the same height point to simpler methods.
Check the symmetry as well. On an armchair the ornaments of the left and right arms should match, and on a mirror frame the corners should correspond. Small variations are normal in handwork and are part of its charm. Large differences, broken tips or visible filler are points worth asking about. If in doubt, ask exactly how an ornament was made.

Gilding and finishes
Gold, silver, patina and high-gloss lacquer define the character of classic furniture. There are several techniques: traditional gilding, in which very thin metal leaves are laid onto the surface, metal leaf in gold or silver tones, and gold-coloured lacquers or paints. Each has its place. They differ in effort, appearance and care. What matters is that it is clearly stated which one was used.
A good finish is even, without runs, bubbles or trapped dust. With patina and antique finishes, gradations are intended, but they should look natural and appear where real signs of age would occur. Edges are a reliable test: there you quickly see whether the coating wraps around cleanly or thins out.

Upholstery and fabrics
For armchairs, sofas, chairs and beds, the upholstery decides how comfortable a piece is in everyday life. Check whether seat and back are padded firmly and evenly, whether the cushion recovers its shape when you stand up and whether you can feel the edges of the frame through the padding. Good upholstery gives without sagging.
With the cover, seams, pattern alignment and finishing count. Seams should run straight, piping and decorative nails should sit at even intervals, and with patterned fabrics the pattern should be aligned sensibly across seat, back and arms. Ask for fabric samples if you want to check colour and feel in advance.

Fittings, handles and glass
Small parts reveal a great deal about a large piece. Handles, escutcheons and hinges should be firmly fixed, should not turn and should match the furniture in colour and style. Doors should close without pressure and sit flush, and locks should work easily. With display cabinets and mirrors, look at the glass: is it fitted flat, are the edges cleanly finished, is the reflection distorted?
How to check quality before you buy
When you buy online, good information replaces touching the piece. Read the product description carefully and note the dimensions, colours and any details on material and finish. Compare the photos: do they show the piece from several angles, and are there close-ups?
If you would like to know more, simply ask. On request we send additional photos, detail shots, exact measurements or fabric samples. Specific questions help most, for example: How is the back finished? What does the carving look like up close? Which finishing technique was used? What is the seat height? You will find all ways to reach us on our contact page. Our guide buying baroque furniture may also help.
Other customers' experiences are another useful pointer. On its Google Business Profile, Casa Padrino holds a rating of 4.9 out of 5 from 364 reviews (as of October 2026). Look for several photos from different angles, close-ups of carving, seams and fittings, and exact dimensions. If anything is missing, ask. On request we send additional detail shots.
How do I recognise good carving?
By its depth, crisp edges and consistent symmetry. In raking light you can see whether ornaments are worked in relief or look flat. Small variations are normal in handwork.
What is the difference between gold leaf and gold lacquer?
