Arranging Armchairs in Pairs: Which Distance Suits Conversation

Placing two armchairs opposite each other or at a slight angle creates a comfortable conversation zone in the living room or reading corner. But how far apart may the seats be so that you can still chat comfortably without having to raise your voice? And which furniture fits in between without disrupting eye contact? The right distance depends on room size, armchair depth and intended use.

The Ideal Distance for Conversation

For pleasant conversation, the distance between the front edges of two Armchairs should be 150 to 200 centimetres. Within this range, you can communicate effortlessly, maintain eye contact and still enjoy sufficient legroom. If you sit more than 250 centimetres apart, conversation becomes strenuous because you have to speak louder. Less than 120 centimetres, on the other hand, quickly feels cramped, especially when both armchairs have voluminous armrests.

Arrangement: Frontal or Angled

When armchairs stand exactly frontal, a formal atmosphere emerges that suits representative spaces. Angling them 30 to 45 degrees towards each other makes the seating group more relaxed and invites longer stays. The angled arrangement also has the advantage that both people have a view into the room or towards the window, rather than only looking at each other. In small rooms, the diagonal placement often saves space because the chair backs need not run parallel to the wall.

Furniture Between the Armchairs

A low coffee table or small Side Tables between the seats provide surface area for cups, books or a reading lamp without blocking the line of sight. Table height should be no more than 50 centimetres so that you can look over it. Round or oval shapes appear more harmonious than angular tops and make passing easier. Those who forgo a central table can assign each armchair its own side table and thus gain more flexibility in arrangement.

Consider Room Size and Proportions

In a living room of 20 square metres or more, an armchair group can be planned generously without the room appearing overcrowded. For smaller rooms, a distance at the lower end of the scale is recommended, around 150 centimetres, combined with narrow armchairs without sweeping wing backs. Ensure that at least 80 centimetres of passage width remains around the entire seating group so that you can walk past comfortably. A rug beneath both armchairs visually unifies the group and clearly defines the zone.

Lighting and Accessories

For the conversation corner to remain inviting in the evening, each armchair needs its own light. Floor lamps beside or behind the seats provide indirect light that does not glare. Small cushions and a woollen throw over the backrest make the arrangement more homely. Avoid tall plants or shelves directly between the armchairs because they interrupt the line of sight and visually divide the space.
