Combining Armchair and Floor Lamp: Height, Distance and Light Direction

The combination of armchair and floor lamp is one of the classic arrangements in the living area. However, for the interaction to work, height, distance and light direction must be correct. Only then will a pleasant atmosphere be created without disturbing shadows or glare. In this article you will learn what matters when it comes to placement.
The Correct Height of the Floor Lamp
For reading areas, the following applies: the lampshade should be approximately at eye level or slightly above when you are sitting in the armchair. This corresponds to a total height of the floor lamp of 140 to 160 centimetres. At this height, the light falls from above onto the book or tablet without causing glare. Models with a swivelling shade offer additional flexibility to adjust the light direction. For pure ambient lighting, floor lamps may also be taller, around 170 to 180 centimetres, so that they illuminate the room generously.
Optimal Distance Between Armchair and Lamp
The lateral distance between Armchairs and floor lamp should ideally be 30 to 50 centimetres. This leaves enough space to stand up without bumping into the lamp, whilst the light still reaches the seating area. For reading lamps, position the floor lamp slightly behind the backrest, approximately at the height of the armrest. This allows the light to fall over your shoulder and illuminate the reading surface evenly without casting harsh shadows.
Consider Light Direction and Shadow Formation
Ensure that the light does not come directly from the front. Frontal lighting causes glare and tires the eyes. Position the floor lamp offset to the side so that the light falls diagonally from above. Right-handed people benefit from a lamp on the left side, left-handed people vice versa. This way you do not cast a shadow on the work surface when writing or reading. For Armchairs with high backrests, an arc lamp whose shade extends beyond the backrest can be useful.
Choosing Bulbs and Light Colour
Warm white LED bulbs with 2700 to 3000 Kelvin are suitable for reading areas. They create a homely atmosphere and tire the eyes less than cool white light. The brightness should be between 400 and 600 lumens so that you can read comfortably without the rest of the room appearing too dark. Dimmable models allow you to adjust the light intensity depending on the time of day and activity. A matt shade diffuses the light more softly than glossy surfaces.
Stylistic Coordination of Armchair and Lamp
In addition to functional aspects, visual harmony plays a role. With classic upholstered armchairs in Baroque or Chesterfield style, floor lamps with a brass base or turned wooden elements are suitable. Modern armchairs work well with reduced lamps made of matt metal or concrete. Pay attention to proportions: a bulky wing chair can accommodate a more substantial floor lamp, whilst a delicate cocktail chair harmonises better with slender models. In terms of colour, armchair and lamp do not need to match, but should fit the overall concept of the room.
Practical Tips for Implementation
Before drilling holes or placing furniture permanently, test different positions. Sit in the armchair, have someone hold the lamp and check where the light falls most pleasantly. Route the cable so that it does not create a tripping hazard. Cable channels or cables routed under the carpet provide a solution. If you move furniture frequently, floor lamps with a foot switch rather than a wall switch are worthwhile, so that you can operate the light comfortably from the armchair.
