Side Table in a Passageway: Which Width Does Not Narrow the Path

You would like to place a side table in the hallway or in a passageway, but are unsure how wide the piece of furniture may be? The question is justified, because an overly expansive piece of furniture can block the path and become a tripping hazard in everyday life. At the same time, the table should offer enough surface space and not appear lost. In this article, you will learn which dimensions are suitable for passageways and what you should consider when planning.

Minimum Width for Comfortable Passage

As a rule of thumb: a passageway should remain at least 80 cm clear after deducting all furniture, so that one person can pass comfortably. Better still are 90 to 100 cm, especially if you regularly walk through the area with shopping bags, laundry baskets or prams. Measure the total width of your hallway or passageway and subtract this minimum width. The remaining centimetres are available for your side table.

Typical Table Widths and Their Effect

The selection of Side Tables ranges from narrow consoles with 30 cm depth to wider models with 50 cm or more. For a passageway, tables with 30 to 40 cm width are recommended. They offer sufficient space for keys, post or a table lamp without noticeably narrowing the path. Models with 45 to 50 cm width are only suitable if the passageway is at least 130 cm wide overall.

Choosing the Right Shape and Location

In addition to the pure width, the shape also plays a role. Semi-circular or curved tables often appear less bulky in passageways than rectangular models because they have no sharp corners. Place the table against the wall if possible and not in the centre of the room. This keeps the traffic area maximally clear. Also ensure that drawers or doors open forwards and do not protrude into the walkway.

Considering Height and Proportions

A narrow table appears more harmonious if it is not too low. Models with 75 to 85 cm height stretch visually and make the passageway appear more spacious. Very low tables under 60 cm, on the other hand, can appear squat and are more easily overlooked, which increases the risk of tripping. Combine the table with a narrow mirror or a portrait-format picture on the wall to enhance the vertical effect.

Practical Additional Functions

For passageways, Side Tables with integrated shelves or drawers are particularly suitable. They create additional storage space without requiring you to place further furniture. Ensure that handles and fittings do not protrude beyond the table edge. Models with smooth fronts or recessed handles are the safer choice in passageways. An open shelf beneath the table top offers space for shoes or bags and keeps the floor clear.
