Sideboard Opposite the Sofa: Which Height Does Not Obstruct the View

When planning a living room, one often faces the question of how high a sideboard may be when positioned directly opposite the sofa. Too low and it appears lost, too high and it blocks the room and interferes with watching television or conversation. The correct height depends on the seating height, the distance and the use. In this article you will learn which dimensions have proven effective and what you should consider when planning.

Seating Height and Eye Level as a Starting Point

The seating height of common Sofas is between 42 and 48 cm. When seated, the eye level of an average-sized adult is approximately 100 to 110 cm above the floor. A sideboard that remains lower than this eye level does not obstruct the view. As a rule of thumb: furniture up to approximately 90 cm in height appears unobtrusive and leaves the room open, whilst models over 100 cm significantly restrict the view.

Recommended Heights According to Use

For a sideboard that serves primarily as a surface or storage space, 70 to 85 cm is ideal. This height offers sufficient space for drawers and compartments without appearing intrusive. If the furniture is to support a television, add the height of the device: the centre of the screen should be at eye level, approximately 100 cm. An 80 cm high sideboard plus a 40 cm high television results in a total height of 120 cm, which is already too high for many living rooms. Here a flatter model of around 60 cm is recommended.

Consider the Distance Between Sofa and Sideboard

The closer the sideboard stands to the sofa, the lower it should be. At a distance of 2 to 2.5 metres, Sideboards up to 80 cm in height appear harmonious. If the furniture stands further away, approximately 3 to 4 metres, it may also be 90 to 95 cm high without dominating. In small rooms with little distance, you should opt for models under 75 cm to avoid narrowing the space.

Visual Effect and Room Proportions

A low sideboard makes the room appear more spacious because the wall above remains visible. High models, on the other hand, create a more enclosed atmosphere and are suitable for large rooms with high ceilings. Ensure that the sideboard is not higher than the backrest of the sofa, otherwise an unbalanced appearance results. Most sofa backrests are between 75 and 90 cm, which can serve as guidance.

Practical Reference Values at a Glance

  • For pure storage furniture: 70 to 85 cm height
  • For TV furniture without obstructed view: maximum 60 to 70 cm
  • With short distance (under 2.5 m): maximum 75 cm
  • With large distance (over 3 m): up to 95 cm possible
  • Lower than the sofa backrest: usually more harmonious

Consider Materials and Design

Dark, solid-looking furniture appears visually heavier and should be chosen rather lower. Light surfaces, open shelving or models on slender legs appear lighter and may be somewhat higher. Baroque furniture with ornamentation and strong colours unfolds its effect best at moderate height, so that the details come into their own without overloading the room.
