Sofa with Side Table: Which Distances Are Optimal?

Sofa with Side Tables on Both Sides: Which Distances

You want to flank your sofa with side tables and wonder how much space you need to allow for this? The correct positioning determines whether the arrangement is practical or causes problems in everyday use. Distances that are too narrow make it difficult to pass by, while distances that are too wide make the furniture appear disconnected. In this article you will learn which measurements have proven effective and what you should pay attention to when planning.

Lateral Distance Between Sofa and Side Table

The distance between the armrest of the sofa and the side table should be between 5 and 15 cm. At less than 5 cm the arrangement appears cramped, at more than 15 cm a visual gap is created. Ideally, place the table close enough so that you can comfortably set down a cup or a book from your seat without stretching. Make sure that the table does not protrude beyond the edge of the sofa so that no one catches on it.

Height of the Side Table in Relation to the Seat

The top edge of the side table should ideally be at the same height as the armrest or the seat of the sofa. For most Sofas this means a table height between 50 and 65 cm. A table that is too low forces you to bend down, one that is too high appears disproportionate. If you are unsure, choose a table whose top is about 2 to 5 cm above the seat. This way you can reach it effortlessly without changing your sitting position.

Passage Width Behind the Sofa

If the sofa is not directly against the wall, you need at least 60 cm passage width behind the backrest. This value applies to the space between the back of the sofa and the wall or another piece of furniture. For frequently used pathways you should allow 80 to 90 cm so that two people can comfortably pass each other. Also take into account the depth of the Side Tables if they protrude laterally beyond the sofa.

Distance to the Wall or Other Furniture

At least 10 cm of space should remain between the outer edge of the side table and the wall. This buffer makes cleaning easier and prevents scratches on the wall. If a shelf, a chest of drawers or an armchair is next to the side table, a distance of at least 40 cm is recommended. This leaves enough room to open drawers or sit down without bumping into the table.

Symmetry and Visual Balance

If you place a side table on both sides of the sofa, pay attention to equal distances and similar table heights if possible. Symmetry creates calm in the room and makes the arrangement appear well thought out. The tables do not have to be identical, but should match each other in style and proportion. With a three-piece sofa you can also place a table on only one side if the room has an asymmetrical layout or if you want to create a reading corner there.

Rule of Thumb for Total Width

Calculate the total width of the arrangement using the following formula:

  • Width of the sofa (for example 220 cm)
  • plus twice the width of the side table (for example 2 × 40 cm)
  • plus twice the lateral distance (for example 2 × 10 cm)
  • results in a total width of 320 cm in this example

Before purchasing, check whether this width fits into your room and whether there is still enough space for movement. A sketch to scale helps to avoid wrong purchases.
