Bed with Nightstand: Which Width for Different Sizes

Bed with Nightstand: Which Width for Different Sizes

When planning a bedroom, one often faces the question of how much space should remain next to the bed for a nightstand. Too little distance feels cramped, too much makes the room appear unbalanced. Both the bed size and the room dimensions play a role. This article shows which widths have proven effective for various bed sizes and what you should consider when making your selection.

Standard Dimensions for Nightstands at a Glance

Nightstands typically have a width between 40 and 60 cm. These dimensions are sufficient to place a lamp, a book and a glass of water without the table appearing too bulky. In narrow rooms, 40 to 45 cm suffice, in spacious bedrooms 50 to 60 cm are also appropriate. The depth is usually 35 to 45 cm, so the table does not protrude too far into the room. It is important that the top edge of the nightstand is approximately level with the top of the mattress, between 50 and 65 cm in height.

Distance Between Bed and Wall

To allow you to walk comfortably around the bed and reach the nightstand easily, you should plan for at least 60 cm of space between the bed edge and the wall. This value applies to single beds and smaller double beds up to 160 cm wide. For larger Beds from 180 cm onwards, 70 to 80 cm are recommended so that the passage does not become too narrow. In very small rooms, the distance can be reduced to 50 cm, but passage then becomes noticeably tighter.

Nightstand Width for Different Bed Sizes

The width of the nightstand should be oriented to the bed size so that the proportions are correct. The following guidelines have proven effective in practice:

  • Single bed (90 to 100 cm): nightstand 40 to 45 cm wide
  • French bed (140 cm): nightstand 45 to 50 cm wide
  • Double bed (160 cm): nightstand 50 to 55 cm wide
  • Double bed (180 cm and wider): nightstand 55 to 60 cm wide

These values apply to symmetrical arrangements with one nightstand on each side. If you use only one nightstand, it may also be somewhat wider.

Room Size and Total Width Calculation

To check whether bed and nightstands fit in your bedroom, add all widths and distances. Example for a 160 cm wide bed: 70 cm distance left, 50 cm nightstand, 160 cm bed, 50 cm nightstand, 70 cm distance right gives 400 cm total width. For a 180 cm wide bed with slightly larger nightstands, you should plan for at least 440 cm room width. In narrower rooms, you can do without one nightstand or choose narrow Side Tables with 35 to 40 cm width.

Style Considerations and Material Combinations

Besides the dimensions, the nightstand should match the bed stylistically. With beds made of solid wood, nightstands in the same wood tone appear harmonious, while upholstered beds can also be combined with metal frames or lacquered surfaces. The height of the nightstand should be chosen so that you can comfortably reach for objects while lying down, without stretching or bending. A difference of plus or minus 5 cm to the mattress height is uncritical.
