Mirror Next to the Front Door: Height and Distance from the Door Frame
When leaving the house in the morning, many people want to take one last quick look in the mirror. A mirror next to the front door serves exactly this purpose and simultaneously makes the hallway appear larger. But at what height should it hang, and how much distance from the door frame makes sense? We clarify these questions below so that you can design your entrance area functionally and harmoniously.
The Right Height for the Mirror
The lower edge of the mirror should be approximately 120 to 130 cm above the floor. This way, shorter people can easily see themselves in it, while taller people can at least view their face and upper body. If you choose a large standing mirror or a floor-length wall mirror, this consideration is largely eliminated. For smaller models, the rule is: the centre of the mirror should ideally be at eye level, approximately 150 to 160 cm above the floor.
Distance from the Door Frame
At least 15 to 20 cm of space should remain between the door frame and the edge of the mirror. This distance ensures that the mirror does not get in the way when opening the door and does not appear visually cramped. If the door opens inwards, check the swing range: the mirror must not be in the opening radius. In very narrow hallways, it may be sensible to mount the mirror on the opposite wall rather than directly next to the door.
Choosing the Right Size and Format
For the area next to the front door, Mirrors in portrait format are particularly suitable, as they require little width whilst still offering good visibility. A height of 80 to 120 cm is sufficient for most hallways. If you wish to create a prestigious impression, you can also opt for a larger model that extends from the floor to approximately 180 cm in height. Ensure that the width of the mirror suits the wall space: for a narrow wall next to the door, 40 to 50 cm should not be exceeded.
Combination with Furniture in the Entrance Area
Many entrance areas benefit from the combination of mirror and storage surface. A narrow console beneath the mirror provides space for keys, post or small decorative items. The top edge of Consoles is usually at 75 to 85 cm height, so that approximately 35 to 50 cm of wall space remains between the console and the lower edge of the mirror. This arrangement creates clear structure and uses the vertical space efficiently.
Lighting and Safety
A mirror next to the front door should be well lit so that you can see yourself in it even at dusk or in the evening. Wall lights on the left and right or a ceiling light with sufficient brightness are recommended. When mounting, ensure secure fastening, especially for larger and heavier mirrors: use suitable wall plugs and screws that match the wall construction. A mirror with a wooden or metal frame should be hung at a minimum of two points to prevent tilting movements.
